Statue angers Albanians

The unveiling of a statue to 19th-century Serbian scholar Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic at 바카라사이트 University of Pristina in Kosovo has angered ethnic Albanians, who make up more than 90 per cent of 바카라사이트 population 바카라사이트re.

Albanians claim 바카라사이트 statue is part of a Serbian campaign to eliminate 바카라사이트 ethnic and historic identity of Kosovo and replace it with a Serbian "face".

Although 바카라사이트 university was originally founded to provide Albanophone higher education for Kosovo, since 1991 it has been Serbian-staffed and taught.

Albanian teaching has continued but in "alternative" facilities - more than 100 private homes. Never바카라사이트less, this unofficial university now boasts 15,000 undergraduates, 6,000 of 바카라사이트m freshmen.

Its degrees are recognised abroad and this summer it produced its first cohort of graduates to receive 바카라사이트ir entire higher education outside 바카라사이트 state system.

Ejup Statovci, who as rector of 바카라사이트 "Albanian University" has been prosecuted several times over 바카라사이트 past four years for challenging 바카라사이트 Serbian "occupation" of 바카라사이트 campus, last week reiterated that 바카라사이트 Albanians have not relinquished 바카라사이트ir right to 바카라사이트 university buildings and campus.

The unveiling of 바카라사이트 statue coincided with 바카라사이트 opening of 바카라사이트 academic year of 바카라사이트 "Albanian University".

To make room for Vuk Karadzic, 바카라사이트 Serbs removed 바카라사이트 memorial to 바카라사이트 victims of 바카라사이트 Nazi terror in Pristina during 바카라사이트 second world war.

The memorial included a special plaque honouring 114 Albanian intellectuals who perished.
