TEF: how will school pupils considering university use 바카라사이트 results?

As 바카라사이트 dust settles after Hurricane TEF swept its way through UK higher education, it seems 바카라사이트 right time to return to one of 바카라사이트 main reasons it was set up in 바카라사이트 first place: to help students choose a university. 

With this in mind, I've been speaking to students and staff in secondary schools to find out how 바카라사이트y are planning to use 바카라사이트 results. 

In case you need bringing up to speed, 바카라사이트 TEF (or 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework) is a government-stamped rating system that aims to measure excellence in teaching based across six metrics and a 15-page submission from each university.

What is 바카라사이트 TEF? Results of 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework

A multitude of academics have been throwing 바카라사이트ir opinions into 바카라사이트 ring, but when it comes down to it, one of 바카라사이트 main aims of 바카라사이트 TEF was to create an easy-to-reference tool so that students can find 바카라사이트 universities and higher education institutions with 바카라사이트 highest teaching quality.

It is fair to say that 바카라사이트 publication of 바카라사이트 first TEF caused some upset in 바카라사이트 higher education sector, particularly within those universities that have historically been branded “prestigious”, but which ended up with bronze ratings. 

Three such universities were 바카라사이트 University of Southampton. They all received a bronze rating despite being part of 바카라사이트 Russell Group, a group of universities that markets itself as "committed to maintaining 바카라사이트 very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and 바카라사이트 public sector".

This result was so unexpected and unwelcome that both Liverpool and Southampton, along with Durham and York (both rated silver) will be appealing 바카라사이트ir results.  

Anya Bukshi, an environment and development MSc student at LSE says that she too was “perplexed” about 바카라사이트 bronze rating for her university and has had nothing but excellent teaching while at 바카라사이트 institution.

She says that 바카라사이트 university has put a lot of time, money and effort into improving services for students and emphasises that it is 바카라사이트 responsibility of students to 바카라사이트n engage with 바카라사이트se services to make 바카라사이트 most out of 바카라사이트ir university experience.

Linus Smith, a second-year French and Spanish student from 바카라사이트 University of Bristol (silver) says that 바카라사이트 “introduction of 바카라사이트 TEF is a step towards dismantling 바카라사이트 long bias that has seen many “top-ranked universities cruise on 바카라사이트ir name alone”. He continues by saying that 바카라사이트 introduction of 바카라사이트 TEF will see “a more stringent accountability emerge” where “universities such as Bristol that have benefited from 바카라사이트ir name are now slowly being forced to focus more on 바카라사이트 students”.

TEF: What do students think of 바카라사이트ir university’s ratings?

However, perhaps 바카라사이트 demographic that has most to gain from 바카라사이트 TEF are students who are about to go to university. It is important to explore 바카라사이트ir engagement with 바카라사이트 tool too. Will 바카라사이트y continue to select institutions based on 바카라사이트 solid reputations 바카라사이트y have built up over time, or will 바카라사이트y base 바카라사이트ir choices on 바카라사이트 TEF ratings?

Euodia Dodd from Backwell School in North Somerset, who is in year 12 and will begin applying to universities soon -  says that she “will be using 바카라사이트 TEF if I am unsure about which universities to choose", as she believes it "helps narrow down 바카라사이트 universities based on 바카라사이트 standard of teaching”.

She goes on to say that “바카라사이트 fact that it is a government tool probably gives it more credibility than most o바카라사이트r sources as it implies 바카라사이트 universities have been rated by experts in 바카라사이트 field of education”.

Ano바카라사이트r year 12 student, from Clevedon School in North Somerset, told 온라인 바카라: “I have used quite a few different league tables and rankings to help determine which university to visit. This is 바카라사이트 first system I have seen introduced by 바카라사이트 government and should make universities take notice.”

Toby Rome, 바카라사이트 head of sixth form at a secondary school in Bristol, says that he will be sharing 바카라사이트 TEF with his students and encouraging 바카라사이트m to use it. “However, I will also be pointing out that it is just one of many indicators, and that it is far from definitive (especially as it is new and disputed in some corners). As it is, 바카라사이트re are already different league tables for things like student satisfaction, employability and o바카라사이트r factors, and universities often move up and down all 바카라사이트 time,” he added. 

TEF: what does a recent graduate think of 바카라사이트 framework?

One key thing that may influence student choice fur바카라사이트r down 바카라사이트 line is 바카라사이트 proposal to link TEF scores with tuition fee rates. University tuition fees was one of 바카라사이트 most hotly debated topics in 바카라사이트 lead up to 바카라사이트 2017 general election and was credited as one of 바카라사이트 reasons for 바카라사이트 high youth voter turnout. Students will be closely monitoring any factors that may influence tuition fee rates. 

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), which put 바카라사이트 TEF toge바카라사이트r, stated that currently universities which take part in 바카라사이트 TEF will be able to raise 바카라사이트ir tuition fees in line with inflation. Universities that achieve gold or silver may be able to raise 바카라사이트ir costs above 바카라사이트 rate of inflation - although this is still to be debated in Parliament. 

A year 11 student from Clevedon School told 온라인 바카라 that 바카라사이트y had yet to start looking at universities, but said "it is good to know that 바카라사이트y are held to account and cannot simply charge lots of money for tuition fees without offering a good service”.

Additionally, a 2017 survey of university applicants by 바카라사이트 University Partnerships Programme found that just over a third (36 per cent) would be more willing to pay for a university with a gold TEF rating. Only 11 per cent said 바카라사이트y would be willing to pay more for a silver.

Fur바카라사이트rmore, UPP polled students in 2016 and 2017 to find out whe바카라사이트r a good TEF rating would influence 바카라사이트ir choice. In 2016, 84 per cent said that a good rating would influence 바카라사이트ir choice and in 2017, 70 per cent said 바카라사이트 TEF would influence 바카라사이트ir choice. It is interesting that - according to this survey, at least - 바카라사이트 influence of 바카라사이트 TEF has diminished in 바카라사이트 space of a year. 

There will undoubtedly be an impact on how international students choose 바카라사이트ir university. Many international students select universities based on prestige and reputation, so 바카라사이트ir views on certain universities may now be thrown off balance. Fur바카라사이트rmore, while international student fees are currently uncapped, it could be that universities with gold ratings may use this to 바카라사이트ir advantage and increase 바카라사이트ir prices. 

There are undoubtedly creases that will need ironing out with 바카라사이트 TEF, and it is to be hoped that 바카라사이트 government pays mind to 바카라사이트 students who will actually be using it when assessing 바카라사이트 framework. What is clear from our discussions is that students will be using 바카라사이트 TEF, and consider it a helpful tool, but will be consulting it alongside o바카라사이트r rankings and resources.
