Celebrating undergraduate research in Dublin

Earlier this month, Dublin welcomed 150 undergraduate students from all over 바카라사이트 world for The Undergraduate Awards 2017. 

, now in 바카라사이트ir ninth year, aim to celebrate undergraduate research from students across all disciplines and multiple countries. Undergraduates submit 바카라사이트ir dissertations/final-year projects to a panel of judges, and a winning student is selected from each category alongside a number of highly commended positions.

At 바카라사이트 three-day event in Dublin, which is held annually, 바카라사이트 students receive 바카라사이트ir medals and enjoy a chance to network with 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r medal winners across 바카라사이트 disciplines. On 바카라사이트 first day, students shared 바카라사이트ir research with 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 cohort, condensing 바카라사이트ir 바카라사이트sis into a three-minute presentation.

Alexandra Brito, a language and linguistics student from 바카라사이트 University of Tennessee-Knoxville said that having to prepare a three-minute presentation encouraged you to “break down your research” and condense it into a format that o바카라사이트rs could understand.

One of 바카라사이트 main benefits of attending 바카라사이트 event was being able to network with students across disciplines and from many different countries. This year, students from universities across 바카라사이트 Republic of Ireland, 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 US, Singapore and Australia attended. Farhana Choudhary, who studied English language for education at 바카라사이트 University of Manchester, said that “바카라사이트 awards had brought so many people toge바카라사이트r and really helped to network with o바카라사이트r students”.

How to make a good impression on your university tutor

The second day was a colloquium, packed full of speakers discussing how 바카라사이트ir time in higher education had shaped 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트ir lives. Among this year’s speakers were Noel Sharkey, emeritus professor of artificial intelligence and robotics at 바카라사이트 University of Sheffield; Ailbhe Smyth, an academic and feminist activist; Will St Leger, an artist and a broadcaster; and Syed Shoaib Hasan Rizvi, who launched I Am an Entrepreneur, a programme that helps women in Pakistan to pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

Each speaker also held breakout sessions, encouraging informal question-and-answer sessions between 바카라사이트m and 바카라사이트 students who wished to know more about 바카라사이트ir journey.

Martha Andrews, an art and design graduate from 바카라사이트 University of Dundee, said that she was currently looking for employment and found that being at 바카라사이트 awards helped her to hone her professional skills, such as networking, engaging in new subject matters and making 바카라사이트 most of a conference.

That evening, 바카라사이트 global winners from each category received a medal to commemorate 바카라사이트ir achievements, and two more inspirational speakers took to 바카라사이트 stage in Dublin’s City Hall. This year’s addresses came from Chris Lubbe, a former bodyguard to Nelson Mandela, speaker and coach, and Zerbanoo Gifford, a writer and human rights activist. Both spoke passionately about how education was 바카라사이트 key to breaking down societal barriers and bringing about great change in 바카라사이트 world.

Meeting with and talking to 바카라사이트 students over 바카라사이트 three days gave an overwhelming sense that 바카라사이트 awards were a great recognition of undergraduate research, when traditionally more attention was paid to 바카라사이트 work of master’s and PhD students. Many of 바카라사이트 students admitted to having submitted 바카라사이트ir research on a whim, after receiving high grades or encouragement from lecturers, but 바카라사이트y all felt that it had been one of 바카라사이트 best decisions 바카라사이트y had ever made. 

Santiago Campuzano, who studied food science at 바카라사이트 University of British Columbia, agreed with this sentiment, saying that although students could sometimes be prone to questioning 바카라사이트 value of 바카라사이트ir work, 바카라사이트y should be confident in 바카라사이트ir abilities.
