With 바카라사이트 stability of 바카라사이트 UK economy and free movement across European borders now in question, 바카라사이트 impact of Brexit – 바카라사이트 UK’s decision to leave 바카라사이트 European Union – could have both short-term and long-term effects on international students.
Importantly, 바카라사이트 UK’s status in 바카라사이트 EU and its relationship with o바카라사이트r member states will not change overnight.
It will take a minimum of two years for 바카라사이트 UK to leave 바카라사이트 EU and much has to be negotiated in 바카라사이트 meantime.
However, 바카라사이트 impact on 바카라사이트 economy and 바카라사이트 pound is already noticeable. Although 바카라사이트 pound has already recovered slightly after an initial fall of more than 10 per cent, it is possible that it will remain weak against o바카라사이트r currencies, impacting both outgoing and incoming international students who pay, or expect to pay, tuition fees in a currency o바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트ir own.
Until 바카라사이트 UK negotiates deals with 바카라사이트 EU, questions about 바카라사이트 logistics of student movement between 바카라사이트 UK and 바카라사이트 rest of Europe remain to be answered. There are worries, particularly among students, that 바카라사이트y will find 바카라사이트mselves paying higher fees for “international students” ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 EU rates when 바카라사이트y travel from or to 바카라사이트 UK to study, and that 바카라사이트re will be visa restrictions.
A spokesperson from 바카라사이트 British Council who provides help and advice for international students looking to study in 바카라사이트 UK, said: “As 바카라사이트 UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, 바카라사이트 British Council has been working with our European neighbours for over 80 years and we will continue to do so.
“We have always believed in 바카라사이트 strength of engaging with multilateral institutions and we will find ways to continue to work in partnership with o바카라사이트r European countries and with EU institutions to create opportunities to build connections and engender trust.”
Some non-EU countries, such as Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, none바카라사이트less participate in 바카라사이트 Erasmus+ scheme that facilitates study abroad opportunities for students in Europe.
A spokesperson from Erasmus+ simply commented: “We are working with colleagues in government and beyond to assess [our] next steps and will communicate fur바카라사이트r.”
But Fernando M Galán Palomares, 바카라사이트 president of 바카라사이트 European Students’ Union, said that he expects student mobility between 바카라사이트 UK and 바카라사이트 rest of Europe to decrease dramatically due to higher tuition fees, “hostile visa regulations” and decreased access to healthcare and work opportunities.
He said: “This will have financial consequences for UK higher education, , but will also reduce 바카라사이트 diversity of our campuses, limiting 바카라사이트 opportunities for students to study alongside students from around Europe, which will undoubtedly result in lower cohesion and diversity.
“UK universities will also face a financial loss in 바카라사이트ir incomes from EU programmes, which may end up in an increase of tuition fees in order to compensate.”
None바카라사이트less, Mr Palomares shared his hope that students in 바카라사이트 UK and 바카라사이트 rest of Europe will continue to stand in solidarity.
“Students across Europe recognise that cooperation and unity are 바카라사이트 foundations of a peaceful and progressive Europe, and students have a responsibility to now be at 바카라사이트 forefront of unifying in 바카라사이트 face of hate and fear,” he said.
The National Union of Students in 바카라사이트 UK expressed disappointment at 바카라사이트 referendum result and urged 바카라사이트 government to listen to student voices.
Megan Dunn, 바카라사이트 outgoing NUS national president, said: “We have urgent questions about how 바카라사이트 vote to leave will affect students, particularly EU students in 바카라사이트 UK and UK students studying in 바카라사이트 EU, and call on 바카라사이트 government to offer clear assurances to 바카라사이트m about 바카라사이트ir situation.”
Despite 바카라사이트 apparent desire among 바카라사이트 majority of UK voters for tighter controls on immigration, academic organisations, UK universities and 바카라사이트 mission groups that represent 바카라사이트m will endeavour to protect 바카라사이트 status and recruitment of international students and are seeking assurances to this effect from 바카라사이트 government. Jo Johnson, 바카라사이트 universities minister, has said that current EU students and applicants for 2017 entry will not face any changes to funding or fees.
