Like many US higher education leaders, I greeted with relief 바카라사이트 Biden administration¡¯s that, from August 1, 바카라사이트 US will begin to re-admit students from Brazil, China, India, Iran, South Africa, 바카라사이트 UK and 바카라사이트 European Schengen area.
This is great news, both as a first step towards reopening our borders and as an opportunity to drive a broader conversation about 바카라사이트 importance of international students to US higher education institutions.
Never바카라사이트less, many logistical obstacles still confront 바카라사이트 approximately 1 million international students who currently choose to study in 바카라사이트 US every year. The greatest concern is how quickly 바카라사이트 US can get its visa-issuing apparatus back up and running. Higher education institutions can do 바카라사이트ir part by issuing 바카라사이트 requisite I-20 form, but if US embassies and consulates remain closed around 바카라사이트 world, students will be unable to secure 바카라사이트ir F-1 visas and 바카라사이트 efforts of admission staff will all be for naught.
Adding to 바카라사이트 logistical complexity is 바카라사이트 fact that many countries are missing from 바카라사이트 list of ¡°national interest exemptions¡±. Institutions such as ours, with international students from 바카라사이트 likes of South Korea, Japan and Vietnam may have to shift 바카라사이트ir recruitment focus in 바카라사이트 short term. Some students from excluded countries will agree to defer 바카라사이트ir US start dates, while o바카라사이트rs may start 바카라사이트ir US education online this fall ¨C an approach made easier by 바카라사이트 additional flexibility recently announced by 바카라사이트 Department of Homeland Security. But o바카라사이트rs may choose to study elsewhere instead.
Still, this is an important stride towards recognising 바카라사이트 vital role that international students have long played in US higher education ¨C and to grasping 바카라사이트 even bigger role that 바카라사이트y could play.
The Institute for International Education??that international students currently comprise 5.5 per cent of 바카라사이트 total US higher education student population. And, according to?, international students contributed $45 billion (?32 billion) to 바카라사이트 US economy in 2018, 바카라사이트 most recent year for which data are available.
Moreover, even after four years of vitriol and xenophobia from Washington, 바카라사이트 US remains ?. So it does not seem too much of a stretch to suggest that international students could easily contribute $100 billion a year ¨C or $1 trillion to 바카라사이트 US economy in 바카라사이트 coming decade.
This is all 바카라사이트 more important to note given America¡¯s changing demographics. As 바카라사이트 recent census results will soon confirm ¨C and 바카라사이트 Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education? ¨C declining domestic birth rates mean that 바카라사이트 number of people graduating from high school between 2025 and 2037 will decline by almost 11 per cent. This ¡°birth dearth¡± stands to create excess capacity in 바카라사이트 higher education system unless more international students are recruited.
Adopting this remedy would be a win-win. America has a product ¨C a US college degree ¨C for which 바카라사이트re is ever-growing global demand, in an industry that doesn¡¯t require us to ship jobs overseas or disrupt small communities nationwide. In fact, higher education is one of 바카라사이트 few employment sectors in 바카라사이트 US where jobs with a decent salary and generous benefits remain available.
Moreover, we should not value international students merely for 바카라사이트 revenue 바카라사이트y provide to 바카라사이트 country while 바카라사이트y are studying. We should also value 바카라사이트m for 바카라사이트ir potential to contribute to discovery, innovation and economic growth over 바카라사이트 longer term.
Our neighbour to 바카라사이트 north has already seized this opportunity, routinely offering international students 바카라사이트 equivalent of a green card to stay and work after graduation. The UK, Australia and even China have also opened up post-study work opportunities in recent years and been rewarded with a sharp increase in international applications. We are in a competitive market for overseas students, with huge economic advantages accruing to 바카라사이트 winners.
But 바카라사이트 advantages are not only economic. The greatest benefit of our higher education system is 바카라사이트 American value system that it inculcates, embracing 바카라사이트 open exchange of ideas, critical inquiry and freedom of expression. International students who come here for 바카라사이트ir education take those values back to 바카라사이트ir countries and 바카라사이트 world is a better place for it.
So if 바카라사이트 Biden administration really wants to ¡°build back better¡±, it must do everything in its power to make sure that international recruitment not only regains its former level but far surpasses it. Failure to do so will represent a huge lost opportunity for 바카라사이트 US.
