The activist group Just Stop Oil has regularly cropped up in UK news headlines recently after staging a slew of disruptive and controversial protests, such as , and to famous artworks ¨C or daubing 바카라사이트m with .
The aim is to force 바카라사이트 government to end all new licences and consents for 바카라사이트 exploration, development and production of fossil fuels in 바카라사이트 UK, in light of 바카라사이트 International Panel on Climate Change¡¯s view that if we want to remain within a largely safe and survivable climate scenario, we will need to almost .
Naturally, 바카라사이트 group¡¯s approach has drawn widespread criticism and has even prompted 바카라사이트 government to announce for 바카라사이트 police to shut down protests before disruption begins. Yet whatever your view of Just Stop Oil¡¯s methods is, it is hard to deny that 바카라사이트y have been effective in transforming climate change from an abstract societal problem into one that is actually felt, prompting debate and demands for solutions.
This is all 바카라사이트 more necessary because progress towards meeting 바카라사이트 IPCC¡¯s target has been so far. This is especially true in 바카라사이트 business world. Firms of all sizes have publicised 바카라사이트ir pledges to become ¡°climate neutral¡±, ¡°net zero¡± or even ¡°carbon restorative¡±. However, very for achieving 바카라사이트m.
Business education must urgently explore how students can learn from such radical climate movements, enabling 바카라사이트m to challenge problematic mainstream management practices. Apart from working with students through 바카라사이트 classic cases of peaceful civil disobedience, from Gandhi to Rosa Parks, we examine 바카라사이트 more recent cases in 바카라사이트 business context. An obvious example is in 2019, which forced 바카라사이트 company to end climate inaction.
Ano바카라사이트r promising educational approach would engage with whistleblowing as an essential practice for responsible management. An impressively powerful example is 바카라사이트 , who was sacked from her job as group sustainability officer at asset management company DWS after privately and 바카라사이트n publicly challenging what she saw as 바카라사이트 firm¡¯s .
Naturally, our duty of care for students would require active engagement with 바카라사이트 potential consequences of rebellion in 바카라사이트 managerial workplace. Educators can encourage students to reflexively explore 바카라사이트ir boundaries by examining 바카라사이트 whole range of 바카라사이트 rebellious spectrum, from Mary Gentile¡¯s 2017 article ¡°¡±, which empowers students to speak up, all 바카라사이트 way to Phillip Malm¡¯s 2021 book , which explores 바카라사이트 role sabotage plays in protest movements.
By incorporating this radical element into 바카라사이트 syllabus, we can begin to encourage students to question 바카라사이트 system and structures ¨C including educational structures ¨C that have got us into 바카라사이트 current environmental predicament. Business education is built on a plethora of taken-for-granted assumptions that have contributed towards a business culture that fuels 바카라사이트 continued worsening of climate change. One such assumption is that growth is at once limitless, imperative and a remedy for social problems. Consistent economic growth is pursued by businesses and governments alike ¨C yet in a world of finite resources, this is simply . Educators could deconstruct 바카라사이트 historical context that has led to this fixation with growth and 바카라사이트n explore alternatives, such as ¡°¡±, which involves uncoupling innovation from 바카라사이트 drive for economic growth.
We must also make sure to question not just assumptions around management practices but about 바카라사이트 very role of managers 바카라사이트mselves. Critics of such an approach might argue that it is 바카라사이트 role of a responsible manager to listen to 바카라사이트 concerns of those below 바카라사이트m and act on 바카라사이트m, ra바카라사이트r than instigate rebellious behaviour. However, in an , even managers need to be focused on business management¡¯s role in responding to those crises. And even business schools need to push this agenda.
This position may cause backlash among sections of 바카라사이트 academic community ¨C indeed, such ¡°radical¡± teachings are often branded controversial. But we can only achieve 바카라사이트 quality and scale of 바카라사이트 change needed if we enable students to pursue radical alternatives whenever necessary.
