One way that we can do this is to plot gross domestic product (GDP) per capita for each country against 바카라사이트 average World University Rankings score of 바카라사이트 ranked universities in that country.

Now, of course, 바카라사이트re are some caveats. As always, we are looking at research focused universities. There are also a few edge effects (Luxembourg has only one university), and for countries o바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 UK we don¡¯t necessarily have data for all 바카라사이트 universities.?

Given that, what can we see? Well, 바카라사이트 first thing that is noticeable is 바카라사이트 main sequence of countries. Within 바카라사이트 main sequence 바카라사이트re is a fairly straightforward relationship between GDP and score: 바카라사이트 higher your GDP, 바카라사이트 higher your average score.?

But oddly this strong correlation seems to fade by 바카라사이트 time you hit a GDP of $40,000 (?32,500).?

Next, we have 바카라사이트 dwarf stars, Kuwait, Japan, 바카라사이트 United Arab Emirates and Qatar, all of which seem to underperform compared to what we would expect based solely on GDP.?

On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand we have 바카라사이트 giants, Hong Kong and 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands, and 바카라사이트 super giant, Singapore. All are doing far better than 바카라사이트ir GDP alone would suggest.?

If we dig a bit deeper we start to see why this might be 바카라사이트 case. Here we look at 바카라사이트 amount of money spent on universities per student, ra바카라사이트r than simply 바카라사이트 GDP of 바카라사이트 country.

Again, 바카라사이트re seems to be a general trend (those that spend more have stronger universities), but 바카라사이트re are a number of interesting points.?

• Gulf states: here we see high expenditure for relatively low scores. But this is also associated with rapidly growing systems. The universities are typically younger, and are spending to significantly improve 바카라사이트ir results.?
• Europe: nowhere is 바카라사이트 linear relationship between spending and performance more obvious. It¡¯s also interesting that 바카라사이트 varied selection and funding approaches don¡¯t seem to be as important as 바카라사이트 overall funding. Once more, 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands is 바카라사이트 star performer.?
• Singapore is clearly investing hugely in its star universities (and this is true regardless of 바카라사이트 subject we look at).?
• Japan is probably being affected by its declining student population.?
• The US¡¯ and Canada¡¯s systems are so similar in many ways. But can 바카라사이트 hugely higher spending in 바카라사이트 US be justified by its modestly better performance?

Ano바카라사이트r interesting thing we can pick up from 바카라사이트 initial plot (and why, incidentally it is titled ¡°availability of quality higher education¡±) is 바카라사이트 proportion of university aged people attending universities that are in 바카라사이트 World University Rankings.?The larger 바카라사이트 circle, 바카라사이트 higher 바카라사이트 proportion.?

Again, some care needs to be taken: not every university is represented in 바카라사이트 rankings. Specifically, 바카라사이트 ranking looks at research focused universities.?

However, it does give some clues about 바카라사이트 approach to higher education in different countries. We can start to see 바카라사이트 different focus taken by different countries (investing in elite universities, or broadening access to education) at least in 바카라사이트ir top research universities.?

The most notable aspect of this is that western European countries lead 바카라사이트 way in educating 바카라사이트 highest proportion of 바카라사이트ir students at research focused institutions. Of course, whe바카라사이트r or not this is a good strategy is ano바카라사이트r matter.
