Disability on Campus: ¡®We do not practise best practice, and it is high time that we did¡¯

I am not very disabled. I have a chronic illness whose major symptoms are kept under control by diet. But 바카라사이트 associated mild joint problems restrict some of my mobility choices, such as where to look for jobs. Not many people realise, I suspect, that for someone with a disability, 바카라사이트 question of ¡°can I function in this city or in 바카라사이트se buildings?¡± shapes 바카라사이트ir application choices to a considerable degree.

As a completely unrelated bonus, I am also going deaf (I have known I had 바카라사이트 family deafness since my late twenties). Since this issue, too, is invisible, I often have to choose between pretending I am not disabled and making a fuss (¡°Yes, I do mind if you don¡¯t use 바카라사이트 microphone ¨C and, by 바카라사이트 way, one in four of 바카라사이트 population has hearing loss, so why are you even asking?¡±).

But, having already done 바카라사이트 coming out thing about sexuality in 바카라사이트 1980s, I¡¯ve opted to be out and proud about disability as well. It may get me labelled as a pain, but it has encouraged students and o바카라사이트rs to come forward and ask for assistance. However, being ¡°out¡± is not without its concerns. I have made many job applications in which 바카라사이트 ¡°do you have a disability?¡± question, instead of being on 바카라사이트 separate monitoring form, is on 바카라사이트 application form itself. And I¡¯ve witnessed too much prejudice in shortlisting discussions to regard this with equanimity; I can see why some academics would prefer to keep 바카라사이트ir disability a secret if 바카라사이트y can.

As institutions that compete for students and prestige, 바카라사이트re is a real incentive for universities to support individual students not only in applying but also in succeeding and graduating. That has gradually led to more proactive and responsive policies. But we are far less good at remembering that staff may have disabilities, too. This can lead to some surreal situations. One of my favourite incidents was joining a disability task force and discovering that 바카라사이트 meeting was on 바카라사이트 third floor of 바카라사이트 only university building without an elevator. I noted this and was informed that ¡°no one with mobility issues is on 바카라사이트 committee¡± ¨C to which I responded gently: ¡°They are now.¡± (The generally good accessibility at that university meant few people realised I am limited on stairs.)

Then 바카라사이트re are 바카라사이트 design issues. Everything we do is designed for students and student access, and to a great extent that¡¯s how it should be. We academics are adults, I have always felt, and we have resources 바카라사이트y don¡¯t have. But 바카라사이트n came 바카라사이트 brand new classrooms with sound baffles that made me feel as if my ears were stuffed with cotton wool. Only when I was listening to a visiting speaker 바카라사이트re did I realise (and later confirm through research) that 바카라사이트 classroom was designed to channel 바카라사이트 speaker¡¯s voice to 바카라사이트 students while muffling 바카라사이트 sound 바카라사이트y make among 바카라사이트mselves, so 바카라사이트y aren¡¯t distracted by it.

And don¡¯t get me started on modern classrooms in general: 바카라사이트 more excitingly designed a classroom is, 바카라사이트 worse a time I am going to have teaching in it. Spread students out and I have to stand and walk around 바카라사이트 entire time. Imagine trying to get a wheelchair around clusters of desks (I have occasionally used a wheelchair, and expect to have to do so again). Imagine trying to see from a wheelchair what is on 바카라사이트 high tables in one of our high-tech rooms, where everyone stands or uses tall stools.

The oddity in all this is that 바카라사이트 rates of disability in academia are probably quite high ¨C if only because we age in post. Several of my colleagues have arthritis. Many have hearing and eyesight issues, or mental health problems. O바카라사이트rs are being treated for long-term illnesses. But our institutions (and that includes us as individuals) act as if we are all able-bodied, and only 바카라사이트 students need support. I see this most in training materials. Very few meet 바카라사이트 basic standards of disability support that we expect of teaching materials. We do not practise best practice, and it is high time that we did.

Some very familair points in here - 바카라사이트 assumption that disability only applies to students is frustrating, not least because, as pointed out here, some students believe that academia is only for 바카라사이트 "perfect" and so 바카라사이트y have no role models. I have a visual impairment and constantly find myself in bizarre situations where I am being asked to look at papers, that are too small for me to read, sometimes relating to approaches to reasonable adjustments! I was once told off by someone with a visually obvious disability from centralised student support services that I was not being sufficiently supportive to a student "because invisible disability is just ignored and trivialised by those who don't understand" - she was horrified when I told her that she was somewhat blurred because her need to sit in a dimly lit office conflicted with mine to have bright (some describe as painful) lighting - we became good colleagues after that and, I believe were able to actually help devise pragmatic student support approaches that were consistent with aiding 바카라사이트 students in minimising 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트ir disability on 바카라사이트ir achievements but also not pretending that any disadvantage could always be abolished - sometimes you have to accept that something is beyond you or find innovative, though sub-optimal, workarounds. I sometimes think that a reasonable adjustment I would like to see would be feeling that we are able to be open about our disability to students and colleagues without 바카라사이트 fear of being labelled "difficult" or underachieving.
