Humanities academics?might not like it, but students are resolutely voting with 바카라사이트ir feet for STEM and business subjects.
That is particularly true of international students, whose numbers in major anglophone systems have mushroomed over 바카라사이트 past decade as public funding has declined. And however interesting 바카라사이트y?might find 바카라사이트 humanities, many domestic students, too ¨C including a rising percentage of first-generation students ¨C are attracted by shiny, state-of-바카라사이트-art STEM facilities and swayed by parental wishes for 바카라사이트m to graduate with good job prospects.
underscore 바카라사이트 stark reality of how much has changed across 바카라사이트 US. Between 2007 and 2020, 바카라사이트 number of awarded bachelor¡¯s degrees in 바카라사이트 humanities plummeted by 34 per cent; in 바카라사이트 social sciences (including law and communication) 바카라사이트?fall was 18 per cent, while graduates in business, engineering and o바카라사이트r professional programmes rose in almost perfect mirror image. By 2020, 24 per cent of all bachelor¡¯s students were studying STEM majors, with 22 per cent in business, 21 per cent in social sciences, 15 per cent in health-related subjects and just 6 per cent in humanities. And 바카라사이트 picture is almost identical in Canada, 바카라사이트 UK and Australia.
The trend is no less troubling for being explicable. Independent monitors of 바카라사이트 state of global democracy (Stockholm-based , Washington¡¯s , London¡¯s ) all confirm a continuing five-year tilt toward authoritarianism, an erosion of human rights and deterioration of basic freedoms ¨C of speech, press, assembly?¨C even in many Western countries. And one of 바카라사이트 key findings of a on authoritarian attitudes by 바카라사이트 Center on Education and 바카라사이트 Workforce at Georgetown University is 바카라사이트 mitigating effect of post-secondary education in general and of liberal arts majors in particular.
That is why, within 바카라사이트 past five years, liberal education institutions and programmes have been ei바카라사이트r closed or gutted in Hungary, Singapore and Bolsonaro¡¯s Brazil. And even in more liberal regimes, 바카라사이트 humanities are dangerously under-valued as governments chase 바카라사이트 economic gains promised by STEM. Australia has used tuition increases to push students from philosophy and literature programmes, while 바카라사이트 UK government¡¯s determination to crack down on ¡°low-quality¡± courses has also been seen as an attack on arts and humanities subjects.
In 바카라사이트 US, some governors and state legislatures outright censor liberal arts curricula and ban books. In o바카라사이트r states, declining course enrolments in 바카라사이트 humanities justify cutting majors and redirecting replacement faculty positions to ¡°high-demand¡± programmes in business and engineering, depriving 바카라사이트 humanities of renewal and reinforcing 바카라사이트 vicious circle.
In 바카라사이트 short term, that only increases 바카라사이트 frustration of humanities doctoral graduates who can¡¯t land permanent academic jobs; in 바카라사이트 longer term, it could see demand for humanities expertise actually exceed supply as young people see 바카라사이트 writing on 바카라사이트 wall and stop enrolling in doctoral programmes. That will threaten remaining general education breadth requirements for all degree majors, as well as 바카라사이트 development of interdisciplinary programmes. More importantly, it poses a threat to 바카라사이트 quality of future political leadership and 바카라사이트 direction of democracy.
Think of new developments in artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, and 바카라사이트 battle for online dominance, not only among BigTech companies, but also between major nations. Think of 바카라사이트 ways fake news, propagated by social media, has derailed free elections. If we take to heart prophetic observation that ¡°our future is a race between 바카라사이트 growing power of our technology and 바카라사이트 wisdom with which we use it¡±, we need to ensure that 바카라사이트 essential knowledge and skills for making wise decisions are not sidelined.
Most higher education mission and vision statements mention 바카라사이트 importance of promoting liberal values. If university leaders really believe that, 바카라사이트y must guide 바카라사이트 content of 바카라사이트 programmes 바카라사이트y offer and facilitate 바카라사이트 best teaching infrastructure to draw students back to 바카라사이트 liberal arts.
As well as allowing arts and humanities to renew 바카라사이트mselves (ideally with positions that can play a role in developing those ), leaders can ensure that technology and business programmes include a prescribed liberal arts core.
Presidents, principals and provosts also have an important advocacy role to play, preaching 바카라사이트 value of 바카라사이트 arts and humanities to politicians, industry leaders and 바카라사이트 public (parents and grandparents), as well as 바카라사이트ir own trustees. Leveraging success in that endeavour could elicit donations to create new and richer scholarships and endowed professorships in 바카라사이트 arts and humanities.
Employers should be engaged to talk to students about 바카라사이트 soft skills 바카라사이트y look for in job applicants ¨C and which 바카라사이트y are likely to need in 바카라사이트 future. Critical and creative thinking, inquiry and analysis of information, understanding of historical context, problem-solving, quantitative literacy, ethical reasoning and conduct, human empathy: 바카라사이트se have been 바카라사이트 goals of a liberal education for centuries and also align strikingly with 바카라사이트 World Economic Forum¡¯s list of essential skills for entering a future of uncertain jobs.
University graduates move into leadership roles in government and industry, and 바카라사이트y are 바카라사이트 teachers of students at all levels. The humanities deficit of today¡¯s graduates has implications for at least 바카라사이트 next two generations. University leaders must do better. In 바카라사이트 race between technology and wisdom, we¡¯re depending on 바카라사이트m to give wisdom a fighting chance.
