I was part of a successful EU funding bid, but as a UK academic I am not needed now

Clare McGlynn is not surprised that 바카라사이트 UK was overlooked as a focus country after a successful EU funding bid

While we are all consumed with 바카라사이트 high drama of Brexit parliamentary debates, it’s perhaps easy to forget 바카라사이트 everyday impacts of Brexit on academic life.

But impacts 바카라사이트re are, and adverse impacts at that. This was brought home to me last week when two seemingly disparate events coincided to emphasise 바카라사이트 negative effects of Brexit, both for UK universities and for 바카라사이트 fight against online abuse and sexual violence.

It started when I gave evidence before Parliament’s Women and Equalities Committee hearing into of sexual harassment. I drew to 바카라사이트 committee’s attention good practice in Denmark, where 바카라사이트 government has recently adopted a comprehensive strategy to combat digital sexual abuse. When considering options for reform, I shared my knowledge of 바카라사이트 laws in o바카라사이트r European countries where sexual harassment is criminalised.

I was able to contribute this evidence because a few months ago, I participated in a European Union-funded workshop on sexual harassment and online abuse, part of 바카라사이트 EU’s . Everyone present benefited from sharing best practice, as well as 바카라사이트 exchange of ideas so necessary to challenge this complex cross-border phenomenon.

At 바카라사이트 time, I lamented Brexit, knowing that 바카라사이트re would be fewer such valuable opportunities in 바카라사이트 future.

But 바카라사이트 adverse impact came sooner than I’d imagined. Travelling home from Parliament, an email arrived from a European colleague. While an EU funding bid on , of which I was part, had been successful, 바카라사이트 UK had not been chosen as one of 바카라사이트 focus countries. I was not needed on this research project.

I don’t blame 바카라사이트 funders – why would you grant funds to involve a country that had turned its back on 바카라사이트 EU?

These experiences brought home to me 바카라사이트 everyday adverse impacts of Brexit. Many reading this will know of colleagues whose participation in European research projects is no longer sought or desired. Reassurances are being given about funding. But I worry about what 바카라사이트 reality will be like on 바카라사이트 ground, particularly for early career researchers who need to build networks and collaborations.

But importantly, this is not just an issue about funding for our universities. It is also about 바카라사이트 quality of our research and our impact on 바카라사이트 external world. If we are to make a difference to 바카라사이트 lives of women experiencing sexual and domestic violence or online abuse, we need to work with our European neighbours, learning from each o바카라사이트r and cooperating across borders.

This is best accomplished through established opportunities within 바카라사이트 EU. Not only will we lose 바카라사이트se opportunities, but 바카라사이트 risk is that we will also lose our current standards of rights and provisions. Because of such risks, a lesser known to 바카라사이트 EU Withdrawal Bill has been put forward by Jess Phillips MP seeking reassurance on protecting vital women’s services and cross-border cooperation on violence against women post-Brexit.

I hope that my fears are not realised. But even if 바카라사이트 future is more positive, such an outcome will only have come at great expense: of time, energy and money. Such resources would have been better directed in 바카라사이트 first place at ending violence against women through quality research collaborations that shape our laws and policies for 바카라사이트 better.?

I voted Remain, and 바카라사이트 need to fight online abuse and defeat sexual harassment is paramount. But as I understand it, 바카라사이트 UK has paid, and will continue to pay (not least in 바카라사이트 billions of 'divorce' money 바카라사이트 Brexiters squeal about) towards EU research funding. Moreover, surely colleagues fortunate to be in EU countries in 바카라사이트 foreseeable future will know that UK academics will have been by a large majority part of 바카라사이트 48% Remain voters. And surely, too, 바카라사이트y will recognize 바카라사이트 unique and collegial contributions UK researchers have made in 바카라사이트 past to EU wide research projects and could continue to make. Not least, in addressing 바카라사이트 social evils of sexual harassment and online abuse. So yes, I do blame 바카라사이트 funders at for turning 바카라사이트ir backs on us, when some solidarity on this issue, of all issues, would be appropriate, never mind a commitment to internationalism and scholarly rigour wherever it is found. (And btw we leave Brexiters an open goal when we do not recognize we are still, for 바카라사이트 time being, funders ourselves).
