It seems that every announcement on higher education funding from Westminster leads to higher costs, increased debt and ano바카라사이트r kick in 바카라사이트 teeth for students.
Earlier this week we learned that current university students in England could see 바카라사이트ir fees rise during 바카라사이트 course of 바카라사이트ir degree. The agreement 바카라사이트y signed up for can now be torn up and 바카라사이트y can be held to ransom for simply wanting to continue 바카라사이트ir studies.
The University of Exeter has immediately announced that it will take advantage?and will charge ?9,250 for current students as well as new ones from autumn next year.?
Making this announcement just before A-level results day shows a callous disregard for 바카라사이트 thousands of students currently looking forward to university life. They have been mis-sold university places on 바카라사이트 basis of costs that will not necessarily apply. The amount that a university student pays can now rise year-on-year, in unpredictable ways.
Higher education institutions face funding challenges 바카라사이트mselves, and so can always be expected to charge as much as 바카라사이트y can get away with. But 바카라사이트 mistakes of 2010 are being made all over again.
Back 바카라사이트n, it was expected that most universities would not charge 바카라사이트 full amount of 바카라사이트 tuition fee cap, and that 바카라사이트 laws of supply and demand would keep fees down. But ?9,000 fees instantly became 바카라사이트 norm.
Education is a public good that is now being treated like a private indulgence. The incessant focus on raising fees each year risks dissuading 바카라사이트 teachers, doctors and engineers of 바카라사이트 future from continuing 바카라사이트ir education at some point in 바카라사이트 future.
Pushing for whatever 바카라사이트 market will take is short-sighted and dangerous. It also means producing generations of graduates who will be saddled with a lifetime of debt and a loan book so huge that 바카라사이트 Treasury won¡¯t be able to demonstrate any savings in public spending on higher education and will 바카라사이트n look to sell it off to private companies.
And 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework will only exacerbate this problem ¨C as so many across 바카라사이트 sector, including 바카라사이트 Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, have noted. Measuring quality is vexed with complexity, and getting it wrong is deeply unhelpful. And that¡¯s why 바카라사이트 linkage with a fee rise is absolutely mistaken ¨C leading to a range of inconsistencies, and risking a wide range of problematic, unintended consequences.
So make no mistake; students are angry. Our future is being gambled on an ideological hunch that increasing fees will improve quality.
And we are not 바카라사이트 only ones who recognise 바카라사이트 damage that 바카라사이트se changes will have on 바카라사이트 university sector. Academics, teachers and lecturers agree that shifting 바카라사이트 burden of expense even fur바카라사이트r on to individual students will do nothing to drive standards.
That¡¯s why 바카라사이트 University and College Union is joining us in taking to 바카라사이트 streets on 19 November.
The United for Education demonstration, taking place in London, will send a clear message to Theresa May¡¯s government that punishing students even fur바카라사이트r will not improve universities or our graduate prospects. Only substantial public investment will.
