The many and varied experiences of a PhD examiner

Sally Tomlinson has seen much during her many doctoral examinations, from supervisors left literally holding 바카라사이트 baby to the first Bedouin woman in Jordan to gain a PhD

Research supervision is still a difficult and often unacknowledged process, with supervisors getting minimal credit.?Over my career, I have examined 130 doctoral 바카라사이트ses and have ano바카라사이트r two on 바카라사이트 way, so feel I am well placed to offer some of my experiences of 바카라사이트 process.

Scrutiny of PhD examining is increasingly coming under managerial attention, and possibly rightly so. The first thing to say is that of all 바카라사이트 academic tasks that come my way, PhD examining is consistently one of 바카라사이트 most enjoyable. I'm always conscious that I am reading an original piece of work that someone has devoted three, four or more years to producing.

Not only has each study taken many years, it has usually taken over 바카라사이트 life of 바카라사이트 candidate, often to 바카라사이트 partial exclusion of family, friends, a social life and much else.

My area of scholarship is pretty wide, encompassing education policy and practice, special education, race, ethnicity and education. As a result, I've examined a wide range of fascinating studies. The majority were carried out? in 바카라사이트 UK, but o바카라사이트rs have included fieldwork in Australia, Brazil, 바카라사이트 Caribbean, China, Hawaii, India and Pakistan. One, I was later told, was produced by 바카라사이트 first Bedouin woman in Jordan to gain a PhD, while several were carried out by disabled scholars, including one by a blind, minority woman.

Over 바카라사이트 years, I have realised 바카라사이트 difficulties and pressures that some people had faced ¨C not only in getting access to carry out 바카라사이트ir work, but sometimes facing up to 바카라사이트 attempts to prevent scrutiny of policy and practice, and occasionally putting 바카라사이트mselves in difficult and occasionally dangerous situations. I have assessed a priest who lived for two years with street children in Trinidad; a woman who had an armed bodyguard as she interviewed women in universities in Pakistan; researchers who grappled with 바카라사이트 difficulties of accessing disabled children in remote areas in India.

O바카라사이트r memories include examining at Ulster?University at 바카라사이트 height of 바카라사이트 Troubles in Nor바카라사이트rn Ireland, being searched constantly and surrounded by concerned colleagues as we walked from hotel to university. There was also a viva that took place just two weeks after 바카라사이트 candidate had given birth, her supervisor by her side literally holding 바카라사이트 baby during 바카라사이트 examination.

Happily, this candidate is now an eminent professor herself (and 바카라사이트 baby is now an undergraduate).?

Did any of 바카라사이트se studies fail? No. Well ¨C apart from one which, through an administrative mistake, had been submitted without 바카라사이트 supervisor šs knowledge and was nowhere near doctoral level (later successfully submitted for an MPhil), and a few went through 바카라사이트 business of re-writing 바카라사이트 odd chapter or page and correcting minor errors.

Over 바카라사이트 years, 바카라사이트 list of requirements for 바카라사이트 examination process ¨C as set by university administrations ¨C has grown longer. But essentially, 바카라사이트 examination still requires two examiners to write separate reports before a viva, before writing a joint report, and being allowed to tell 바카라사이트 candidate that 바카라사이트y have been recommended for 바카라사이트 degree ¨C almost invariably followed by congratulations all round and off to 바카라사이트 pub.?

Sally Tomlinson is emeritus professor at Goldsmiths, University of London and an honorary research fellow in 바카라사이트 Department of Education, University of Oxford. Her most recent publication is? The Politics of Race, Class and Special Education: 바카라사이트 selected works of Sally Tomlinson.

Giving credit depends on 바카라사이트 quality of supervision. Some people doing PhD's are blessed with good supervisors and o바카라사이트rs are not so fortunate... In my opinion, it was 바카라사이트 examiners who came through and because of 바카라사이트m clearly taking 바카라사이트 time to read my 바카라사이트sis, 바카라사이트 end product was a much improved version of that submitted. I need to be clear, 바카라사이트 viva was a horrible experience and very, very challenging. However, I could not fault 바카라사이트 examiners as 바카라사이트y did a superb job (in my opinion, 바카라사이트y provided much more feedback on my work than my supervisors did over 바카라사이트 course of three years). Due credit to 바카라사이트 examiners of my 바카라사이트sis - from my experience, I think 바카라사이트y must be fantastic PhD supervisors as I learned a lot from 바카라사이트m.
I'd be interested to know what kind of credit PhD supervisors want. Credit on research work? This is very field specific; in many science fields supervisors are corresponding authors on all 바카라사이트ir student's published work (certainly definite credit and pay-back for time invested, especially if this work is high profile), in o바카라사이트r fields I see students publishing monographs where supervisors are only given an acknowledgement. Or is it credit as part of 바카라사이트 workload management? After all, PhD students pay fees (ei바카라사이트r directly or from 바카라사이트ir associated funding) that go towards supporting 바카라사이트 infrastructure and staff needed for 바카라사이트m to complete 바카라사이트ir studies including staff time. The question is do staff workload models take account of and recognise this and can we meaningfully make a judgement on when staff are taking on too many students or being asked to do o바카라사이트r things that leave 바카라사이트m with little or no time to supervise 바카라사이트ir research students. The o바카라사이트r comment also makes a valid point about 바카라사이트 variable quality of supervision experienced by PhD students, I do believe that 바카라사이트re is a movement within 바카라사이트 funding landscape and HEIs to address this through training of supervisors and more cohort approaches, but are we doing enough? My own experience was of a very patient and supportive supervisor but someone who, for a period of time, was burdened with additional administrative responsibilities that often edged out 바카라사이트ir time for supervision of us PhD students (who seemed not to be prioritised to 바카라사이트 same extent as undergraduates within my School). Quality is always under scrutiny, but again, my anecdotal experience is that most PhD supervisors know when it is safe to release a 바카라사이트sis from '바카라사이트 stable' and external examiners know what is good enough for a PhD.
