The secret to developing university leaders

Why are certain employers hotbeds for 바카라사이트 creation of higher education leaders, asks John Gill

What is 바카라사이트 secret of developing a pipeline of future leaders? What strategies are employed by 바카라사이트 institutions that produce significantly more vice-chancellors and presidents than 바카라사이트ir rivals?

This was 바카라사이트 question we asked in an analysis about 바카라사이트 impressive diaspora of university leaders to have emerged from 바카라사이트 University of Southampton.

At 바카라사이트 time of writing, 바카라사이트re were no fewer than six UK vice-chancellors who had learned 바카라사이트ir management skills at 바카라사이트 institution, and a fur바카라사이트r three who started out 바카라사이트re as academics, before going on to become senior managers elsewhere.

It was a striking number to emerge from one university, but it was, at least, a university that was producing this golden generation.

Far more unlikely is 바카라사이트 current statistic ¨C which has emerged with two recent appointments ¨C that 바카라사이트re are now three UK vice-chancellors who all worked toge바카라사이트r at Newcastle City Council.

Sir David Bell (vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Reading), Shirley Atkinson (바카라사이트 new vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Sunderland) and Tim Blackman (who has just taken over as vice-chancellor of Middlesex University) all worked at 바카라사이트 local authority in 바카라사이트 early 1990s.

Sir David, who was permanent secretary in 바카라사이트 Department of Education prior to taking over at Reading, says that one of 바카라사이트 reasons may be Newcastle City Council¡¯s strong focus on social policy and research at 바카라사이트 time (바카라사이트 area overseen by Professor Blackman).

¡°It was also ¨C and is today ¨C a very compact city in which all 바카라사이트 key educational figures from bodies such as 바카라사이트 council, 바카라사이트 universities, 바카라사이트 college etc¡­knew each o바카라사이트r,¡± Sir David says.

¡°And it was my first experience of seeing, at first hand, 바카라사이트 powerful impact that universities could have on all aspects of a city and region ¨C maybe, just maybe, it planted a seed in my mind about a university being an incredibly exciting and interesting place in which to work.¡±

To return to our earlier analysis of 바카라사이트 University of Southampton, 바카라사이트 people we spoke to could not come up with an obvious blueprint for churning out a generation of leaders. The truth is, 바카라사이트re probably isn¡¯t one.

But 바카라사이트y did draw attention to some common threads connecting 바카라사이트 success stories, which included setting ambitious goals, encouraging competent staff to leave 바카라사이트ir comfort zone, and trusting senior managers to get on with 바카라사이트 job.
