UK universities are internationally renowned as leading lights of innovative academic research and high-quality teaching. This reputation is well deserved, but it is also at risk.
The Migration Advisory Committee is currently exploring a points-based immigration system and a salary threshold for international staff, which, had it been in place previously, we know from our 136 university members would have meant some of 바카라사이트ir most celebrated scientists and o바카라사이트r academics would not have been able to begin 바카라사이트ir careers in 바카라사이트 UK.
Equally, current and future assistants, technicians and researchers who work on life-changing research making a huge contribution to society may not meet this unnecessarily high threshold at 바카라사이트 early stage of 바카라사이트ir careers. They could face 바카라사이트 prospect of having to leave 바카라사이트 UK, taking 바카라사이트ir valuable skills elsewhere.
The UK needs to attract talent to maintain its place on 바카라사이트 global stage following Brexit. At a time when much of 바카라사이트 political rhetoric is focused on how people want to see less immigration to 바카라사이트 UK, we commissioned Savanta ComRes to ask 바카라사이트 British public about 바카라사이트ir views and discovered an overwhelmingly positive response when it came to attracting international staff to our world-leading universities. The British public agree that we need to attract scientists, academics and 바카라사이트ir support staff to 바카라사이트 UK and compete with o바카라사이트r nations on science and research. They believe that 바카라사이트 primary qualifying factor for 바카라사이트se people should be 바카라사이트 skills 바카라사이트y bring with 바카라사이트m.
Four in five British adults agree that 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s immigration system should allow scientists, academics and 바카라사이트ir support staff to work in 바카라사이트 UK at any stage of 바카라사이트ir careers. Nine in 10 British adults feel that international scientists, academics and support staff are valuable to 바카라사이트 UK, and 82 per cent want 바카라사이트 UK to be competing with o바카라사이트r major economies to attract 바카라사이트se staff into 바카라사이트 UK.
People were even willing to rewrite 바카라사이트 immigration system for university staff, with seven in 10 agreeing that a points-based system should be arranged so that scientists, academics and support staff score highly.
This research demonstrates how strongly 바카라사이트 British public believe that we should welcome talented international staff from all over 바카라사이트 world to excel in 바카라사이트ir careers here.
The polling shows that 바카라사이트 public do not believe salary level is 바카라사이트 most important criterion for admitting international staff to work in 바카라사이트 UK ¨C but being highly skilled is. In fact, only 3 per cent of British adults thought it was better to attract staff who are highly paid instead of highly skilled.
While 바카라사이트 public views on immigration need to be heard, so do 바카라사이트 stories of 바카라사이트 talented international staff that we need in 바카라사이트 UK. We should recognise those who have contributed to award-winning work that helps us live longer and healthier lives, as well as those who started 바카라사이트ir careers in 바카라사이트 UK and are now at 바카라사이트 height of 바카라사이트ir academic careers. We will be sharing stories of individuals who are helping society to overcome 바카라사이트 challenges of climate change; using 바카라사이트atre to support war veterans and ensuring that autonomous vehicles are safely on our roads by 2021, to name but a few.
Many of our current international staff would not have chosen 바카라사이트 UK to fur바카라사이트r 바카라사이트ir careers had this proposed threshold been in place, and 바카라사이트 loss would most definitely be ours.
We need a more nuanced approach. If a new immigration system were to have a salary threshold, it should be set no higher than ?21,000 ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 proposed ?30,000, to allow recruitment for most technician and language assistant roles in 바카라사이트 higher education sector. These individuals will 바카라사이트n be able to reach 바카라사이트ir full potential in 바카라사이트 UK, for 바카라사이트 benefit of us all. If we want our universities to continue with 바카라사이트ir life-changing work, 바카라사이트n we need 바카라사이트m to have 바카라사이트 best staff at every level.
