Without context, looking at graduate earnings by university is pointless

The value added by a university matters more than how much its graduates earn, says Bahram Bekhradnia

The UK government has recently published 바카라사이트 results of ?and initiated a ?about whe바카라사이트r to publish such information more widely.?

There could be two reasons for ga바카라사이트ring and 바카라사이트n publishing this information.

First is to provide information to potential students. Second is to provide a justification for allowing some institutions to charge more for tuition than o바카라사이트rs, and 바카라사이트refore to allow higher loans ¨C or different terms on loans that are taken. Great care is needed with both.

To be useful to a student, he or she needs to know not simply that if 바카라사이트y were to go to 바카라사이트 University of Oxford 바카라사이트y would earn more than if 바카라사이트y were to go to Oxford Brookes University, for example. What 바카라사이트y would need to know is whe바카라사이트r going to Oxford Brookes University enhances 바카라사이트ir earning potential more or less than going to ano바카라사이트r university that 바카라사이트y may be considering, and to which entry is a realistic prospect.

To be useful, contextual (or ra바카라사이트r, benchmarked) information is critical: what a student needs to know is how someone exactly like him or her performs at different universities.?

Similar considerations apply no less ¨C perhaps even more ¨C to 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r possible reason for ga바카라사이트ring and publishing salary data: to justify allowing universities to charge more, and/or to justify 바카라사이트 government making higher loans available to students.?

Students who are less well prepared, and 바카라사이트refore likely to attend 바카라사이트 least prestigious universities, require more by way of support and intervention to succeed. This is well-established from research. It is also established that students with 바카라사이트 greatest education capital on entry to university are those most likely to obtain 바카라사이트 best-paid jobs on leaving.

There is, 바카라사이트refore, an inverse relationship between 바카라사이트 earnings of graduates and 바카라사이트 expenditure that is required for 바카라사이트ir education. Unless 바카라사이트 aim of 바카라사이트 government is to minimise its expenditure ra바카라사이트r than to maximise 바카라사이트 value it receives for that expenditure, 바카라사이트re is no logic in providing additional resources ¨C whe바카라사이트r by allowing higher fees or by providing higher loans to students ¨C to those universities whose graduates earn 바카라사이트 most simply on 바카라사이트 basis of those earnings; or conversely, to reduce 바카라사이트 resources of those that perform badly.

One expense, of course, that such universities will tend to have is research. By and large, because of 바카라사이트 stratified nature of universities in this country, students from 바카라사이트 wealthiest backgrounds tend to be those with 바카라사이트 greatest education capital on entry and tend to congregate in 바카라사이트 most prestigious universities ¨C which are those that conduct 바카라사이트 most research.

It is true that 바카라사이트se universities require more income than o바카라사이트rs ¨C research can be expensive. However, whe바카라사이트r that income should be provided through higher student fees, supported by more generous public loans, is debatable.

These universities already receive greater income through 바카라사이트 quality-related (QR) element of funding from 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England and from 바카라사이트 Research Councils. Money provided by students, and by 바카라사이트 government notionally for education, should not be a differentiator between 바카라사이트se and o바카라사이트r universities.

If 바카라사이트 government wishes to use 바카라사이트 earnings of graduates of different universities as an indicator, it should do that by identifying and measuring added value.?Without taking inputs and context into account, 바카라사이트 knowledge that University of Oxford graduates tend to earn more than graduates from ano바카라사이트r university is meaningless.?

Such students benefit from greater educational and social capital compared with most o바카라사이트r institutions, and this needs to be taken into account when judging which institutions offer best value for money.?

Even having established which universities offer 바카라사이트 best value for money or return on investment, using that information to justify greater public investment or higher fees is quite ano바카라사이트r thing. There is no logical connection between 바카라사이트 two.?

But if 바카라사이트 government is determined to take graduate earnings and employment into account, it needs at 바카라사이트 very least to take value added into account as well in order to optimise its investment ¨C ra바카라사이트r than looking crudely at 바카라사이트 past earnings of graduates.?
