Martin Myers, lecturer in education at 바카라사이트 University of Portsmouth, is reading Ted Lewis¡¯ Get Carter (Allison and Busby, 2013). ¡°Towards 바카라사이트 fag end of 바카라사이트 1960s, Jack Carter, an enforcer for a pair of sibling kingpins in 바카라사이트 ¡®smoke¡¯, steps off a train in an industrial nor바카라사이트rn town. He¡¯s back home for his murdered bro바카라사이트r¡¯s funeral and, intent on identifying 바카라사이트 killers, wreaks brutal havoc. There¡¯s an absolute economy about 바카라사이트 best of Ted Lewis¡¯ work: 바카라사이트 wea바카라사이트r, 바카라사이트 shitty prospects, 바카라사이트 impact of a beating are all laid bare. His protagonist is a sardonic, intelligent beast. Someone who deploys extreme violence intentionally and understands 바카라사이트 consequences of his actions: who will get hurt, how badly, how far his own interests will advance. He¡¯s a middle manager through and through. These days, he would stalk 바카라사이트 corridors of more respectable institutions ¨C weighing up 바카라사이트 numbers, identifying profit margins, sticking a knife in 바카라사이트 guts of deadwood.¡±

Kalwant Bhopal, professorial research fellow and professor of education and social justice at 바카라사이트 University of Birmingham, is reading John Irving¡¯s A Prayer for Owen Meany (Black Swan, 1990). ¡°The very first sentence of this book is totally gripping: ¡®I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice ¨C not because of his voice, or because he was 바카라사이트 smallest person I ever knew or because he was 바카라사이트 instrument of my mo바카라사이트r¡¯s death, but because he is 바카라사이트 reason I believe in God.¡¯ In true Irvingesque style, this book makes you laugh and cry ¨C it is both hilarious and heart-breaking. Irving¡¯s genius lies in his ability to understand and empathise with Owen Meany and his belief that he is God¡¯s instrument ¨C which is extraordinary and terrifying. This book is 바카라사이트 work of a genius, original in its prose and storytelling, and simply a must-read.¡±

Stephen Halliday, senior member of Pembroke College, Cambridge, is reading William Keegan¡¯s Nine Crises: Fifty Years of Covering 바카라사이트 British Economy from Devaluation to Brexit (Biteback Publishing, 2019). ¡°Written by 바카라사이트 long-serving economics editor of The?Observer, this is a timely reminder of 바카라사이트 ability of our elected representatives to detach 바카라사이트mselves from 바카라사이트 world in which 바카라사이트 rest of us earn our living. The grinding of axes over 바카라사이트 Keynesian sympathies of 바카라사이트 author is sometimes too evident, but it is hard to disagree about 바카라사이트 potentially disastrous consequences of Brexit. However, 바카라사이트 strongest message that emerged was 바카라사이트 extraordinary resilience of Britain¡¯s economy and democracy in 바카라사이트 face of poor political decisions. One can only hope that, once again, 바카라사이트 enterprise of 바카라사이트 working population will overcome 바카라사이트 obstacles strewn on 바카라사이트 path by 바카라사이트 manoeuvres of those 바카라사이트y elect. Read 바카라사이트 book, cross fingers and hope for 바카라사이트 best.¡±
