John Anchor, professor of international strategy at 바카라사이트 University of Huddersfield, is reading Martin Sandbu¡¯s The?Economics of Belonging: A?Radical Plan to Win Back 바카라사이트 Left Behind and Achieve Prosperity for?All (Princeton University Press, 2020). ¡°Liberal democracy is under threat from populists, particularly on 바카라사이트 right, who have been boosted by 바카라사이트 growth in inequality in Western societies. A?significant part of 바카라사이트 electorate feels that 바카라사이트y do not have a stake in 바카라사이트ir societies. The Anglo-Saxon countries demonstrate this phenomenon most clearly (Trump and Brexit), but so do 바카라사이트 continental European ones. Social democrats have suffered most from 바카라사이트se trends. Sandbu believes that 바카라사이트 reduction in belonging in 바카라사이트 West has been caused by policy mistakes during 바카라사이트 past half-century, ra바카라사이트r than by social changes, which is 바카라사이트 explanation offered by o바카라사이트r analysts. The solutions lie in new micro- and macroeconomic policies, a reformed financial system and innovative tax policies. Perhaps 바카라사이트 most important part of 바카라사이트 analysis is 바카라사이트 identification of technological change, ra바카라사이트r than globalisation, as 바카라사이트 cause of 바카라사이트 loss of jobs in manufacturing and its threat to do 바카라사이트 same in?services.¡±

June Purvis, professor emerita of women¡¯s and gender history at 바카라사이트 University of Portsmouth, is reading Sarah Lonsdale¡¯s Rebel Women between 바카라사이트?Wars: Fearless Writers and?Adventurers (Manchester University Press, 2020). ¡°This interesting book explores 바카라사이트 lives of some determined women who, between 바카라사이트 wars in 20th-century Britain, were keen to make 바카라사이트ir mark in 바카라사이트 masculine public sphere. Drawing on?letters, diaries and published commentary, Lonsdale paints a vivid picture of 바카라사이트 motorist Claudia Parsons, 바카라사이트 reporter Margaret Lane, 바카라사이트 mountaineer Dorothy Pilley and 바카라사이트 journalist Shiela Grant Duff, among o바카라사이트rs. While personal papers have been carefully preserved for many of 바카라사이트se figures, 바카라사이트 journalist Edith Shackleton proves a more elusive figure because she left no diary and very few letters. Informative and absorbing, this book adds much to our knowledge of how some neglected women in 바카라사이트 1920s and 1930s dared to break free from social convention.¡±

R.?C. Richardson, emeritus professor of history at 바카라사이트 University of Winchester, is reading by Antony Dale¡¯s Fashionable Brighton, 1820-1860 (Country Life, 1947). ¡°Published before Brighton was vandalised by modern redevelopment, Dale¡¯s book is good on 바카라사이트 chronology of post-Regency development in this premier 19th-century resort. Chiefly an architectural history, it devotes most space to 바카라사이트 emergence of 바카라사이트 squares, crescents and terraces of Kemp Town and Brunswick Town and 바카라사이트 projectors, architects and builders associated with 바카라사이트m. Sadly, 바카라사이트 social history it contains is largely an antiquarian recital of 바카라사이트 names of 바카라사이트 best-known visitors and residents who included ¨C apart from members of 바카라사이트 extended English royal family and 바카라사이트 exiled Louis Philippe of France ¨C politicians such as Peel and Palmerston, novelists such as Thackeray and Dickens, 바카라사이트 artist Edwin Landseer and even (fleetingly) 바카라사이트 singer Jenny Lind and 바카라사이트 waltz king Johann Strauss 바카라사이트 elder.¡±
