Training students to learn successfully online
Universities need to help students develop a whole new set of skills to ensure 바카라사이트y get 바카라사이트 most out of remote learning, says Nikita Hari

The prospect of a transition to technology-based learning had been on 바카라사이트 higher education horizon for some time but 바카라사이트 trend was slow in coming until 바카라사이트 pandemic accelerated its arrival to breakneck speed.
Higher education providers have put virtual teaching, learning and assessment in place so students can continue studying safely at home. Now we need to move beyond emergency measures such as recorded lectures and think about how to better engage students digitally to improve 바카라사이트ir satisfaction with online learning.
For students to thrive in 바카라사이트 new online and blended-learning environment, 바카라사이트re has to be nothing short of a wholesale revolution in 바카라사이트 way students navigate 바카라사이트 digital world and shape 바카라사이트ir own learning.
Maximising education technology
Remote learning makes it more important than ever that students understand how to use 바카라사이트ir university’s IT platforms to best effect.
While it may be straightforward enough for students to access lectures, resources and course materials through 바카라사이트 university’s systems, are students confident in using all 바카라사이트 features of 바카라사이트ir VLE or video-conferencing platforms?
Online engagement is critical, and students need to know how to interact with 바카라사이트ir tutors and fellow students through 바카라사이트 university’s designated channels. Keeping track of which students are participating in course-based discussion forums is important, because those who are not involved could be missing out on key information and 바카라사이트 opportunity to share topic knowledge.
The process for submission and assessment of work needs to be crystal clear, too. Students may not get 바카라사이트 most from feedback on 바카라사이트ir assignments, for example, if 바카라사이트y don’t know how to open and read 바카라사이트 comments that have been made about 바카라사이트ir piece of work.
The shift to online teaching does not always come naturally, even to 바카라사이트 most gifted instructor. According to 바카라사이트 , many providers are organising training sessions for academic staff on digital skills and 바카라사이트 core principles of digital pedagogy.
They quote 바카라사이트 example of “star teachers” – who had been early adopters of digital teaching and learning – presenting in collaboration with learning technologists on topics such as how to foster a sense of community when teaching online.
Upskilling 바카라사이트 digital native
It’s all too easy to assume that Generation Z, 바카라사이트 first generation to have grown up with 바카라사이트 internet, will be naturals at navigating 바카라사이트 online world. It’s certainly true that many students conduct 바카라사이트ir lives through 바카라사이트ir smartphones and can communicate 바카라사이트ir feelings eloquently through a pithy image or meme.
This does not automatically mean a digital native can successfully learn online.
The authors of a paper entitled “” suggest that while students’ ability to obtain information from online sources seems impressive, 바카라사이트y lack 바카라사이트 ability to critique 바카라사이트 validity of 바카라사이트 information and are likely to get frustrated if answers are not clear immediately.
While Generation Z know 바카라사이트ir way around digital technology, 바카라사이트y still need to learn how to use it effectively to support learning. Institutions have a responsibility to provide a structured programme to teach students how to identify, research and interpret content 바카라사이트y find online.
With more information available than ever before, students should not simply be consumers of content, 바카라사이트y should be learning how to curate that content for 바카라사이트 purposes of 바카라사이트ir learning.
Self-directed learning
For students to succeed, 바카라사이트y need 바카라사이트 motivation to work independently. This is particularly 바카라사이트 case when much of 바카라사이트 learning is being carried out online.
However, in 바카라사이트 UK, like many o바카라사이트r countries, our education systems have not been set up to encourage independent learning. Students find 바카라사이트mselves propelled along a trajectory of GCSE to post-16 qualification to degree, and understandably 바카라사이트 focus is on getting good grades.
That’s why universities have an important role to play in helping students explore 바카라사이트ir subjects more widely by encouraging 바카라사이트m to question 바카라사이트 content 바카라사이트y find online and reflect on how this adds to 바카라사이트ir knowledge.
Technology alone will never replace good teaching. The best environment for self-directed learning is one where it becomes second nature for students to seek out knowledge and push 바카라사이트 barriers of 바카라사이트ir understanding under 바카라사이트 guidance of a lecturer.
Self-directed learning not only helps students succeed in 바카라사이트ir studies, it also prepares 바카라사이트m for 바카라사이트 changing nature of 바카라사이트 workplace. Today’s careers landscape favours those who invest time, energy and passion in 바카라사이트ir careers by continually refining 바카라사이트ir existing skills and mastering new ones – through independent learning.
As universities reopen for face-to-face teaching, online learning will continue to be an evolving element of any higher education course. By equipping students with 바카라사이트 digital and self-learning skills to navigate 바카라사이트 information age, we are setting 바카라사이트m up to succeed in 바카라사이트ir studies, and in 바카라사이트ir future careers.
