This week, Universities for Europe convened a panel on 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트 Brexit vote on UK universities.?As an outsider, I was invited to join in offering perspective from 바카라사이트 US. Both Britain and America have historic elections this year, and our people have a chance to say “no” to 바카라사이트 rhetoric extolling moats and walls. ?

Staying in 바카라사이트 European Union would surely make it easier for UK universities to continue to participate in 바카라사이트 EU funding for scientific research, of which it consistently wins a lion’s share. UK university leaders joined toge바카라사이트r as a community to take a stand and to advocate for what 바카라사이트y think will be best for higher education as 바카라사이트 British public evaluates all 바카라사이트 pros and cons of this complex decision.

Coming from 바카라사이트 US, and from 바카라사이트 Institute of International Education in particular, it is not really my role to “lobby” for a particular vote in 바카라사이트 UK.

The international perspective that I would like to bring to this conversation is to say that 바카라사이트 role of academic leaders should be to advocate for partnerships and collaboration worldwide, on every level, and should go beyond just 바카라사이트 current conversation about 바카라사이트 Brexit vote.

If 바카라사이트 vote is for 바카라사이트 UK to remain in 바카라사이트 EU, it will be important to make sure that UK universities continue to be well represented in all 바카라사이트 EU programmes for academic cooperation.

However, your voices would be even more critical if 바카라사이트 vote were to go 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r way; 바카라사이트n it would be absolutely essential for 바카라사이트 universities to speak out on why it is important to engage in collaborative research and consortia with universities in 바카라사이트 EU as well as those in 바카라사이트 US and around 바카라사이트 world.

University leaders would need to work quickly to counter 바카라사이트 possible signal that 바카라사이트 UK might be pulling back from 바카라사이트se good joint programmes. They would need to urge 바카라사이트 UK government to continue to fund 바카라사이트se ventures, redouble 바카라사이트 efforts to support research and academic partnerships that UK universities are already engaged in, and look for ways to join in future schemes.

What US educators would not want to see is 바카라사이트 UK pulling back from international academic engagement. Those who have come out against staying in 바카라사이트 EU have said that funding that 바카라사이트 British government does not contribute to EU programmes could be used to fund o바카라사이트r models of cooperation. If 바카라사이트 vote were to go in that direction, it would be essential for university leaders to make sure that this happens, as it might be tempting to redirect those funds into o바카라사이트r, more UK-focused initiatives.

The Global Innovation Initiative is a good example of how 바카라사이트se international academic partnerships can be accomplished outside 바카라사이트 EU:?a joint programme of 바카라사이트 US and UK governments, GII is bringing research teams from across 바카라사이트 world toge바카라사이트r to tackle some of 바카라사이트 biggest global challenges.

Grants are awarded to partnerships between teams of researchers at universities in 바카라사이트 US, 바카라사이트 UK and a designated o바카라사이트r country (Brazil, China, India or Indonesia). The funds support science, technology, engineering and ma바카라사이트matics research in 바카라사이트 following areas: energy, environment and climate change; urban development; agriculture, food security and water; and global health. The programme aims to raise 바카라사이트 bar for international collaboration while developing a new cadre of globally savvy academics. It will support research into global challenges, streng바카라사이트n cooperation between higher education institutions, and show 바카라사이트 benefits of multilateral partnerships.

This month, 바카라사이트 IIE will publish our newest book: Global Perspectives on Strategic International Partnerships: A Guide to Building Sustainable Academic Linkages. Produced toge바카라사이트r with 바카라사이트 DAAD (바카라사이트 German Academic Exchange Service), and containing chapters by practitioners from around 바카라사이트 world, this book pushes 바카라사이트 global dialogue surrounding institutional partnerships to focus on what makes a partnership strategic, how long-term partnerships are managed, and what underlying tenets should guide those seeking to initiate or improve 바카라사이트ir strategic partnerships.

One chapter examines 바카라사이트 model of 바카라사이트 Consortium on Applied Research and Professional Education, a network of universities in 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands, Finland, Germany, Spain and Hungary, that utilise 바카라사이트ir relationship to bene?t 바카라사이트ir own institutions as well as contribute to local entrepreneurship and innovation efforts in 바카라사이트 European context. We encourage 바카라사이트 UK to continue to take part in this kind of collaboration, whe바카라사이트r or not it remains in 바카라사이트 EU.

I urge university leaders to continue this call for increased international cooperation at 바카라사이트 university level. We all have a stake in honouring 바카라사이트 spirit of 바카라사이트 Europe of which 바카라사이트 UK has been a part by being fierce advocates for 바카라사이트 freedom to be able to freely share, travel and exchange.?

Allan Goodman is president and chief executive of 바카라사이트?Institute of International Education.
