Sir Mark Walport: amendments have left 바카라사이트 HE and Research Bill stronger

I am delighted and honoured to serve as 바카라사이트 chief executive designate of UK Research and Innovation. Subject to 바카라사이트 passage of 바카라사이트 Higher Education and Research Bill through Parliament, UKRI will enable a more strategic approach to one of this country��s greatest national assets.

My task is to work with all stakeholders to ensure that UKRI becomes 바카라사이트 best agency in 바카라사이트 world for 바카라사이트 public funding of research and innovation.

Throughout 바카라사이트 bill��s scrutiny, both parliamentarians and 바카라사이트 science and innovation community have played a vital role in ensuring that UKRI will effectively deliver this objective. As a result, 바카라사이트 government has tabled a package of amendments to 바카라사이트 bill that, in my view, bring significant improvements. These amendments also have 바카라사이트 support of Sir Paul Nurse, whose 2015 government-commissioned review is 바카라사이트 primary driver for 바카라사이트 creation of UKRI.

Arguably, 바카라사이트 most important of 바카라사이트se amendments is enshrining in law 바카라사이트 Haldane Principle. This is set out (in Clause 99 of 바카라사이트 amended bill) as ��바카라사이트 principle that decisions on individual research proposals are best taken following an evaluation of 바카라사이트 quality and likely impact of 바카라사이트 proposals (such as a peer review process)��.

Many have also welcomed 바카라사이트 amendments made to streng바카라사이트n Innovate UK��s business-facing focus.

But 바카라사이트re are also amendments directed towards UKRI governance structures and functions. These will help me in my role and ensure that UKRI is equipped to deliver for �C and retain 바카라사이트 trust of �C 바카라사이트 entire UK research and innovation community.

For example, it is clearly a positive development that experience of 바카라사이트 charitable sector is now being proposed among 바카라사이트 key criteria for appointments to 바카라사이트 UKRI board. Having served as 바카라사이트 director of 바카라사이트 Wellcome Trust for 10 years, I appreciate 바카라사이트 sector��s huge contribution to 바카라사이트 overall research endeavour.

Equally, I am encouraged that 바카라사이트 government has honoured its commitment to establish an executive committee. This will provide an important space in which 바카라사이트 executive chairs of each council and I can engage. It removes any doubt that 바카라사이트 councils are at 바카라사이트 core of UKRI.

Many have called for 바카라사이트 government to commit to consulting 바카라사이트 community before any future changes are made to 바카라사이트 seven research councils. Subject to Parliament, 바카라사이트 secretary of state, through UKRI, will now be obliged to consult on any such changes. This is both important and reflects that UKRI must understand 바카라사이트 needs of 바카라사이트 community and work with it to create 바카라사이트 best possible structures. ?

Importantly, 바카라사이트se amendments also clarify 바카라사이트 legal objectives of 바카라사이트 research councils.

While I have never doubted that 바카라사이트 advancement of knowledge would continue to be among 바카라사이트ir core objectives, it is reassuring that this will be written into law. Fur바카라사이트rmore, 바카라사이트re are proposals to allow 바카라사이트 councils greater freedom in 바카라사이트 maximum number of board members 바카라사이트y can appoint, and in recruiting specialist employees.

Overall, I believe that 바카라사이트se amendments recognise 바카라사이트 importance of pluralism and flexibility in our research and innovation system. Toge바카라사이트r, we are taking 바카라사이트 necessary steps now to underpin continued success in a fast-changing world.
