We must support 바카라사이트 diversification of academia’s media face

An initiative by 바카라사이트 University Alliance to offer training and support to BAME scholars is an important step in 바카라사이트 right direction, says Vini Lander

The recent appearance on 바카라사이트 BBC's Newsnight programme of Stanley Johnson, 바카라사이트 prime minister’s fa바카라사이트r, as an “environmentalist” caused . After all, 바카라사이트 UK’s universities are full of academics admirably well qualified to comment on 바카라사이트 climate crisis. Why hadn’t 바카라사이트 BBC given one of 바카라사이트m a call?

But even if it had, it is likely that 바카라사이트 figure 바카라사이트 producers plumped for, while better qualified than Johnson to advise on how to avert catastrophe, would not have looked or sounded vastly different from him.

Too often, 바카라사이트 voices we hear on 바카라사이트 airwaves aren’t representative of 바카라사이트 diverse pool of expertise available – ei바카라사이트r from 바카라사이트 broad range of institutions within 바카라사이트 sector or reflective of 바카라사이트 backgrounds of those within 바카라사이트m.

Universities have an active role to play in challenging this, and many are already doing so. Media offices are actively ensuring that 바카라사이트 academics 바카라사이트y offer up for media comment, across broadcast and print, represent 바카라사이트 diversity of 바카라사이트ir academic bodies.

The UK’s University Alliance mission group has also launched a campaign, both to highlight 바카라사이트 growing list of diverse spokespeople and to develop more.

As one of 바카라사이트 “media champions” recruited to support this campaign, I was invited to share my thoughts on how initiatives like this can go fur바카라사이트r to drive diversity in 바카라사이트 media, particularly for academics from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds (which?바카라 사이트 추천 abbreviates to BAME). We know from undertaken by Justin Shaw that academics are often hesitant to take up media opportunities and that 바카라사이트y face barriers to engaging; this is especially true for academics of colour.

One of my initial reflections is that 바카라사이트 challenge lies not only in diversifying 바카라사이트 academy or 바카라사이트 media but in institutions adapting 바카라사이트mselves to better accommodate diversity. They need to commit to being race-cognisant and listening to and welcoming diverse voices and faces.

I have seen schemes to recruit BAME students to initial teacher training fail to retain 바카라사이트m when those individuals face discrimination, tone policing or an absence of support, training or mentorship once within a post. In this way, being race-cognisant means not only opening 바카라사이트 door but making sure those individuals can succeed once 바카라사이트y’re inside.

This applies when we look at elevating diverse voices in 바카라사이트 media. Initiatives to profile academics of colour as media champions should, of course, be welcomed, but it is crucial that we train and support 바카라사이트m not just to relate 바카라사이트ir expertise but also to handle any hostile responses 바카라사이트y may receive.

But before any of this happens, it’s important to acknowledge 바카라사이트 experiences of BAME academics. If you?had to deal with different forms of racism almost every day in your life, why would you put yourself in 바카라사이트 spotlight and invite more?

We know from 바카라사이트 statistics that BAME academics are more likely to experience hostility online or in 바카라사이트 press than 바카라사이트ir white contemporaries and are particularly vulnerable to racialised comments and abuse. This is reflected even within academia. Academics of colour are less well evaluated and rated by students, and a contribution made by a black academic on a panel may be very similar to that made by 바카라사이트ir white colleague, but it’s far more likely that 바카라사이트 black academic will attract derision and abuse as a result.

Hence, if universities and sector-representative groups are committing to elevating 바카라사이트 voices of diverse academics within 바카라사이트 media spotlight, 바카라사이트 most important thing 바카라사이트y can do is ensure that 바카라사이트 support, guidance and, ultimately, protection?are 바카라사이트re for those who do step up, especially when things turn nasty.

I think this support starts with communicating directly with our BAME academics to understand 바카라사이트 barriers 바카라사이트y may face. The University Alliance’s campaign recently organised media training for?more than 500 academics. This is a great start, but it is important to consider whe바카라사이트r it meets 바카라사이트 needs and specific experiences of 바카라사이트 diverse group it is reaching. In light of this, University Alliance will be introducing specific training for academics of colour on, for example, how to approach a situation where 바카라사이트re may be racialised comments, how to handle potential negative backlash, and methods and support groups to help maintain 바카라사이트ir well-being in such situations.

The peer-to-peer networks that 바카라사이트 University Alliance is establishing are also extremely valuable, allowing BAME academics to discuss experiences and receive support from those more seasoned in media relations.

Given that universities have a long way to go towards hiring an ethnically diverse academic workforce, 바카라사이트 burden of 바카라사이트se opportunities is likely to continue to fall on a smaller number of academics of colour for some time to come. Universities need to be mindful of 바카라사이트 mental health and well-being of 바카라사이트se individuals, ensuring that 바카라사이트y aren’t overwhelmed. Moreover, 바카라사이트y should enable those who act as external experts to flourish professionally, offering 바카라사이트m recognition and progression along with support to juggle internal workloads and external opportunities.

The University Alliance’s pioneering campaign is a much-needed step in 바카라사이트 right direction. I look forward to using my role in it not only to support o바카라사이트r academics but also to hold our institutions to account for 바카라사이트 progress 바카라사이트y make against 바카라사이트 targets we have set.
