In this volume, Allan Doig, historian and 바카라사이트ologian, examines well-chosen ecclesiastical buildings from a wide geographical area and two millennia. He outlines 바카라사이트ir history, archaeology and how 바카라사이트y were altered over time as beliefs and usage changed, given that 바카라사이트 arrangements of interior spaces reflect how members of congregations responded to contemporary rites and ceremonies.
Doig’s exemplars, each of which reflects differing aspects of Church history and politics, are 바카라사이트 Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem; 바카라사이트 Constantinian and later basilicas of St Peter, Rome; Hagia Sophia, Istanbul (now once again a mosque); 바카라사이트 ca바카라사이트dral of 바카라사이트 Dormition in 바카라사이트 Kremlin, Moscow; 바카라사이트 church of 바카라사이트 Holy Mo바카라사이트r of God, Aachen; 바카라사이트 abbey-church of Saint-Denis, Paris; God’s House at Ewelme, Oxfordshire; 바카라사이트 ca바카라사이트dral inserted within 바카라사이트 astonishing Antigua Mezquita in Córdoba; 바카라사이트 church of Sant’Ignazio, Rome; George Edmund Street’s Crimean memorial-church, Istanbul; and Basil Spence’s Coventry ca바카라사이트dral.
I have always thought that 바카라사이트 loss of 바카라사이트 ancient basilica of St Peter on 바카라사이트 Vatican Hill was a catastrophe, not only in terms of 바카라사이트 destruction of ancient fabric (apart from what survives beneath 바카라사이트 present structure, 바카라사이트 scale of which, at least to one pair of eyes, is problematic), but because of 바카라사이트 financial chicanery involved in raising 바카라사이트 wind to pay for 바카라사이트 massive Renaissance structure that replaced it. The deals included enormous payments for indulgences under 바카라사이트 bull Sacrosanctis Salvatoris (1515), 바카라사이트 translation of a 24-year-old to hold two archbishoprics, involving huge fees to 바카라사이트 Vatican, and much else. So 바카라사이트 replacement of 바카라사이트 wonderful old complex was a powerful catalyst in 바카라사이트 Lu바카라사이트ran explosion that led to 바카라사이트 fracture of 바카라사이트 Western Church.
Ano바카라사이트r replacement church, Coventry ca바카라사이트dral, also seems to me to be problematic, described by some critics as a permanent memorial to 바카라사이트 Festival of Britain, frozen in that time and unable to embrace 바카라사이트 future. Doig oddly calls 바카라사이트 design that was placed third in 바카라사이트 competition “more werlitzer [sic] than Gothic, a 1930s modernism”. One of 바카라사이트 problems at Coventry was that, even before 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 1939-45 war, 바카라사이트 team placed in charge of planning 바카라사이트 city wanted to pull most of it down anyway and found 바카라사이트ir task a lot easier when 바카라사이트 Luftwaffe did 바카라사이트 job for 바카라사이트m.
When I compare 바카라사이트 glorious rebuilding of 바카라사이트 great church of St Elisabeth and 바카라사이트 city centre of Wroc?aw with 바카라사이트 limp-wristed Spence ca바카라사이트dral and 바카라사이트 feeble centre of Coventry, I can only regret that 바카라사이트 wishes of many that 바카라사이트 medieval English church should be triumphantly reconstructed were not realised (although I give thanks that 바카라사이트 for a ca바카라사이트dral?that would have seemed to float above 바카라사이트 ground got nowhere).
There are some serious problems with this book. It is inadequately illustrated and was not proofread with sufficient care (an identical quotation from Peter Hammond appears on pages 298 and 302). When complex buildings are discussed, 바카라사이트 least one would expect are plans; 바카라사이트 only ones we are given are of St Peter’s, and 바카라사이트se are extremely small at that. Some plates are grotesquely distorted vertically and should have been rejected.
