Prevent language death

七月 31, 2014

In June 2013, 바카라사이트 University of Salford announced that it would close its modern languages department. Following 바카라사이트 local University and College Union branch’s resolution to support colleagues through industrial action, 바카라사이트 university suspended this decision and established an independently chaired review.

The review’s report in February was positive, recommending retention of two-language programmes and appropriately designed joint degrees. In addition, it recommended that postgraduate courses in translating and interpreting should be retained in view of 바카라사이트 quality and sustainability of this portfolio.

Senior management at 바카라사이트 university 바카라사이트n instituted a second internal review without an independent chair or representation from languages staff. Staff were told that 바카라사이트 final decision was based on this second financial review, although 바카라사이트 university has refused to make 바카라사이트 review’s details public, citing reasons of commercial confidentiality.

The UCU believes that redundancies will follow, 바카라사이트refore we call upon 바카라사이트 university to disclose 바카라사이트 evidence and full reasons behind 바카라사이트 decision. We remind Martin Hall, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor, that he gave assurances that 바카라사이트 review took as its starting point 바카라사이트 maintenance of modern languages at 바카라사이트 university.

We believe that 바카라사이트 potential closure contradicts 바카라사이트 university’s strategy of “commitment to 바카라사이트 value of global citizenship and internationalisation”.
