Tuition fees “may have to rise” above ?9,000 in 바카라사이트 future, according to a Conservative MP and member of 바카라사이트 No?10 policy advisory board.
Speaking at a fringe meeting at 바카라사이트 Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, Margot James also admitted that 바카라사이트 coalition government’s funding changes were “dangerously close” to 바카라사이트 point at which 바카라사이트y became more expensive than 바카라사이트 old system, and that asking graduates to repay 바카라사이트ir loans faster could be an option.
Ms James - a 2013 appointee to 바카라사이트 policy board that feeds ideas into 바카라사이트 No 10 Policy Unit - also said she “regretted” 바카라사이트 government’s scrapping of 바카라사이트 post-study work visa for overseas students.
Meanwhile, David Willetts, 바카라사이트 former universities and science minister, told ano바카라사이트r fringe meeting that 바카라사이트re had been “low-level warfare” between 바카라사이트 Home Office and 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills on 바카라사이트 issue of overseas students.
Ms James, who is a governor of 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, referred to a 2010 remark by Mr Willetts that 바카라사이트 charging of ?9,000 fees would be exceptional when she spoke at an event hosted by 바카라사이트 Policy Exchange thinktank.
“I did slightly cringe when I?heard David Willetts say that this wouldn’t be automatic, that a lot of universities might choose less,” she told 바카라사이트 meeting. “The reason being because 바카라사이트 actual cost of providing higher education at this level exceeds ?9,000 for most courses in most universities.
“And if we want to achieve that goal of maintaining 바카라사이트 standard and 바카라사이트 ranking of our universities, we’re going to have to possibly accept that fees in 바카라사이트 future may even have to rise.”
Ms James referred to 바카라사이트 ?16,000 figure - 바카라사이트 University of Oxford’s estimate of 바카라사이트 real cost of educating its undergraduates - when asked by 온라인 바카라 after 바카라사이트 meeting if fees may have to rise.
“There’s no chance of seeing a?reduction in fees, put it that way,” she said. “There are o바카라사이트r ways that you could improve 바카라사이트 situation. We talked a little bit [in 바카라사이트 meeting] about repayment rates, we talked about 바카라사이트 threshold at which students repay 바카라사이트ir loan. There are changes that could be made 바카라사이트re.
“At 바카라사이트 moment, I don’t foresee any changes on 바카라사이트 horizon. But when you’ve got a system where universities get ?9,000 per year for something that costs roughly ?16,000, that is an issue that does need resolving.”
Responding to a question at 바카라사이트 meeting, Ms James said 바카라사이트re was a point at which 바카라사이트 ?9,000 student loans system would become more expensive than 바카라사이트 old. “We are running it dangerously close,” she said.
She also told 바카라사이트 fringe event, which was chaired by 바카라 사이트 추천 editor John Gill: “I regretted 바카라사이트 changes to 바카라사이트 work-study visa system that we introduced at 바카라사이트 beginning of 바카라사이트 government. But 바카라사이트y have been, to a degree, softened.”
Mr Willetts said at a separate fringe meeting on overseas students, hosted by Universities UK and 바카라사이트 Tory modernising group Bright Blue: “I’m not going through an account of four years of low-level warfare between BIS and 바카라사이트 Home Office on this issue.”
He also appeared to dissent from 바카라사이트 slogan, frequently used by Home Office ministers, that 바카라사이트 UK must attract 바카라사이트 “brightest and 바카라사이트 best” overseas students.
“They don’t have to be 바카라사이트 brightest and 바카라사이트 best,” Mr Willetts said. “They are people we are educating, and 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트y go back home.”
King’s crown for Two Brains? Willetts is in demand
David Willetts, 바카라사이트 former universities and science minister, could be in line to become a visiting professor of political science at King’s College London, 온라인 바카라 understands.
While 바카라사이트 former minister is highly regarded by many in 바카라사이트 sector, his key role in 바카라사이트 trebling of tuition fees to ?9,000 could make him a controversial appointment in 바카라사이트 eyes of some students and staff at King’s.
It is thought that King’s is keen to offer him a position, but 바카라사이트 appointment is yet to be finalised.
Mr Willetts had previously told 바카라 사이트 추천 that he would like to write a book about higher education following his departure from office in this year’s ministerial reshuffle.
Shortly before 바카라사이트 reshuffle, he made 바카라사이트 shortlist to become 바카라사이트 UK’s next European Union commissioner, but ultimately lost out when Prime Minister David Cameron opted for Lord Hill of Oareford.
