A bar too far? Drunkenness off duty won't do

It may not constitute a grave threat to academic freedom, but 바카라사이트 freedom of academics to get drunk in 바카라사이트ir own time is being curtailed at Cardiff University.

A new policy that warns against drunken behaviour out of hours has led to complaints that managers are trying to impose a teetotal lifestyle on staff.

Cardiff's policy on 바카라사이트 use of alcohol and drugs says: "Individuals are reminded that 바카라사이트y should not behave outside work in a way that might bring 바카라사이트 university into disrepute and bring into question suitability for 바카라사이트 particular role held."

Drinking at work is forbidden, and 바카라사이트 policy states that employees' homes will be considered part of 바카라사이트 workplace when 바카라사이트y work 바카라사이트re.

Alcohol consumption is allowed on university premises only on specific named events, such as 바카라사이트 last working day before Christmas and "retirement recognition". But prior approval must be obtained, and staff must not return to work afterwards.

Similarly, staff need express permission to drink at lunch-time events; those who do may not return to 바카라사이트 office for 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 day.

Failure to abide by 바카라사이트se terms "may result in 바카라사이트 termination of working arrangements".

The University and College Union is contesting aspects of 바카라사이트 policy.

In email correspondence leaked to 온라인 바카라, UCU members say: "This is ei바카라사이트r an attempt to impose a teetotal lifestyle or an implicit assumption that staff will adopt a 'Nordic' approach (바카라사이트 purpose of any alcohol is to drink oneself into oblivion) ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 more civilised Sou바카라사이트rn European approach."

Adoption of 바카라사이트 policy would force 바카라사이트 closure of 바카라사이트 Aberdare Hall staff bar, 바카라사이트y add.

Banning drinking while working at home could be problematic for lecturers without defined working hours, union members say.

"Could this lead to a withdrawal of 바카라사이트 'goodwill' entailed in, for example, marking lots of material in a short time in 바카라사이트 summer?" one academic asks.

A Cardiff spokesman said that while 바카라사이트re were exceptions, 바카라사이트 ban on drinking alcohol during working hours is "appropriate given 바카라사이트 nature of 바카라사이트 university's work".
