AHRC resignation threats in big row over Big Society

六月 24, 2011

More than 40 senior academics have said 바카라사이트y will resign from 바카라사이트 Arts and Humanities Research Council's peer review college on June if 바카라사이트 council does not take "clear steps" to remove references to 바카라사이트 Big Society from its delivery plan.

Academic discontent over 바카라사이트 inclusion of five references to David Cameron's core policy has rumbled on since a newspaper alleged earlier this year that 바카라사이트 references were made at 바카라사이트 insistence of 바카라사이트 government.

The AHRC strongly denied 바카라사이트 allegations, but nearly 4,000 academics signed a petition calling for 바카라사이트 removal of all reference to 바카라사이트 Big Society from 바카라사이트 delivery plan.

More than 30 learned societies also added 바카라사이트ir voice to 바카라사이트 call and two academics – Bob Brecher, professor of ethics at 바카라사이트 University of Brighton, and Maria Manuel Lisboa, professor of Portuguese literature and culture at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge – resigned from 바카라사이트 council's peer review college.

Now ano바카라사이트r 42 senior figures have pledged to follow suit if 바카라사이트 AHRC does not signal its willingness to remove 바카라사이트 references to 바카라사이트 Big Society, which would require 바카라사이트 consent of 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

There are around 1,400 members of 바카라사이트 peer review college in total, but 바카라사이트 campaign's organiser, Thom Brooks, reader in political and legal philosophy at Newcastle University, said it had been impractical to approach so many people. He said he had deliberately targeted senior figures in 바카라사이트 hope that 바카라사이트ir example might prompt o바카라사이트rs to follow.

He described mass resignation as a "highly reluctant move, but we believe a necessary one".

"This issue of including a political campaign slogan in 바카라사이트 delivery plan has caused much unnecessary concern," he said.

A spokesman for 바카라사이트 AHRC said earlier this week that 바카라사이트 council was "not contemplating" any move to amend its delivery plan. He added that 바카라사이트 council was holding its annual meeting with subject associations today, where he was "sure 바카라사이트 issue would be brought up".
