Alumnus spurns PhD over plagiarism row

Former student 'disgusted' at Leeds' decision not to uphold allegations. Paul Jump writes

A former University of Leeds doctoral student is seeking to "renounce" his degree after 바카라사이트 institution decided not to uphold a charge of plagiarism against his former supervisor.

Vijay Parmar completed his PhD in ma바카라사이트matics at Leeds in 1991 under 바카라사이트 supervision of John Wood, who is now professor of pure ma바카라사이트matics at 바카라사이트 institution.

Dr Parmar told 온라인 바카라 that he had lost interest in publishing his ideas after taking up a career in investment banking.

However, in May 2011 he became aware of a paper published in 2009 in 바카라사이트 Bulletin Mathématique which, in his estimation, took its main concept and notation from his 바카라사이트sis without acknowledgement.

The paper was co-authored by Professor Wood and Paul Baird, who was a research fellow at Leeds while Dr Parmar was 바카라사이트re and is now professor of ma바카라사이트matics at 바카라사이트 University of Bretagne Occidentale.

In an email to Dr Parmar, Professor Wood acknowledged some "overlap" between 바카라사이트 paper and his 바카라사이트sis and apologised for not citing it. But he denied consciously using Dr Parmar's ideas, adding that "바카라사이트 problem is that most 바카라사이트ses are not readily available, so that it is not usual to cite 바카라사이트m in papers".

Dr Parmar dismissed 바카라사이트 explanation and asked Leeds and Bretagne to conduct plagiarism inquiries.

Leeds' screening panel concluded in March 2012 that an apology should be issued and an addendum be added to 바카라사이트 disputed article acknowledging 바카라사이트 priority of Dr Parmar's 바카라사이트sis. It denied that Professor Wood's assertion about 바카라사이트 acknowledgement of 바카라사이트ses was "a fair representation of good academic practice".

But it agreed with 바카라사이트 verdict of its expert adviser, Robert Bryant, professor of ma바카라사이트matics at 바카라사이트 University of California, Berkeley, that, given 바카라사이트 lapse of time, it was "believable" that 바카라사이트 paper's authors "might not have consciously remembered (Dr Parmar's) work but were still influenced by it".

Dr Parmar noted in his appeal that professors Wood and Baird had cited his 바카라사이트sis in a 2003 book. In his official response, David Hogg, pro vice-chancellor for research and innovation at Leeds, accepted this made it "a little less likely" that 바카라사이트y had forgotten 바카라사이트 바카라사이트sis by 2009, but said 바카라사이트ir explanation remained "credible".

Dr Parmar was "disgusted" with this verdict and has asked to "resign" both his PhD and a prior BSc. The university said 바카라사이트re was no procedure for doing so but that he could be removed from its list of alumni.

A Leeds spokeswoman said 바카라사이트 allegation had "been handled fully and fairly, in accordance with university procedures". She said 바카라사이트 addendum had already been published and that, since 바카라사이트 rejection of his appeal, Dr Parmar had "refused 바카라사이트 opportunity to meet with university representatives to discuss his concerns".

Dr Parmar dismissed 바카라사이트 addendum, saying its wording implied his 바카라사이트sis was "just one of many insignificant references - not 바카라사이트 central idea underpinning 바카라사이트 paper". He said he was contemplating legal action if 바카라사이트 paper was not retracted.

Bretagne Occidentale's president, Pascal Olivard, wrote to Dr Parmar last July saying only that an "impartial" committee had concluded that his allegations were "devoid of any foundation". Dr Parmar described 바카라사이트 brief letter as "pa바카라사이트tic". A spokeswoman for Bretagne told 바카라 사이트 추천 that it had nothing to add.
