Two universities in Argentina have come under fire after a joint conference scheduled to take place on 바카라사이트 history of 바카라사이트 Ottoman Empire amid accusations of “denial” of 바카라사이트 Armenian genocide.
The University of Belgrano and 바카라사이트 National University of 바카라사이트 West, both in Buenos Aires, were due to host 바카라사이트 event on 20-22 March in conjunction with Ankara University.
The conference,?titled “1915, 바카라사이트 longest year of 바카라사이트 Ottoman Empire”, was cancelled at 바카라사이트 last hour, however, after a social media campaign launched in protest by students and members of Argentina’s Armenian community.
Twitter users criticised 바카라사이트 event as “insensitive” and a “provocation” led by a Turkish state agenda, and called on 바카라사이트 Buenos Aires institutions to reconsider hosting 바카라사이트 event.
In an open letter to organisers of 바카라사이트 event, Nicolás Sabuncuyan, director of 바카라사이트 Armenian National Committee of Argentina,?said that he took issue with 바카라사이트 event’s title, “a reference to?바카라사이트 year of 바카라사이트 beginning of 바카라사이트 Armenian genocide”, during which 1.5 million people were killed.
The event’s schedule failed to make “a single mention” of “crimes” that took place during 1915, he continued, and had been co-organised with Ankara University, “an educational institution that is part of 바카라사이트 teaching complex of 바카라사이트 Turkish state, and as such, one of 바카라사이트 parts of 바카라사이트 denialism”.
The same conference has previously been held at universities across Latin America in countries such as Chile, Colombia and Paraguay. The organisers had invited historians to discuss events of 바카라사이트 First World War, as well as 바카라사이트 establishment of 바카라사이트 Turkish republic, for 바카라사이트 centenary of 바카라사이트 Battle of Gallipoli.
But Mr Sabuncuyan said that all 바카라사이트 previous events had included presentations with elements of “denialism…aimed at distorting 바카라사이트 historical truth”.
Argentina is home to one of 바카라사이트 largest populations of ethnic Armenians in 바카라사이트 world, with between 70,000 and 135,000 thought to be living in 바카라사이트 country.
The universities involved have not issued a public response.
