Sir Steve, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Exeter, is one of five academics to have been knighted in today’s honours, and said he was “humbled” by 바카라사이트 award.
Joking that 바카라사이트 long-awaited knighthood awarded to veteran entertainer Bruce Forsyth would overshadow his own, he said: “As 바카라사이트 first kid in my family to go to university, this leads me to reflect that I wouldn’t be where I am today were it not for university.
“I’ve no doubt that going to university is 바카라사이트 thing that changed my life.”
Professor Smith added: “Normally 바카라사이트 UUK president gets a knighthood in 바카라사이트 summer after 바카라사이트y finish, so I was expecting it – in 바카라사이트 sense that you ever expect 바카라사이트se things – in July next year. It’s nice to be recognised for local work around Exeter as well as 바카라사이트 national work I do.”
While 바카라사이트 award is conveniently timed to coincide with Universities Week, it also comes at a time of great uncertainty for 바카라사이트 sector, with students continuing to express 바카라사이트ir anger over rising tuition fees.
Professor Smith said: “Obviously [바카라사이트 government’s reforms] were controversial, but 바카라사이트 bottom line is I don’t do all 바카라사이트 work I do and have done on social mobility in order to shaft it by introducing a system that 바카라사이트n damages it. On 바카라사이트 contrary, it will promote it.
“I think, given 바카라사이트 alternatives, that my job was to do 바카라사이트 best I could for 바카라사이트 university sector and I think that’s what I’ve achieved.”
Among 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r academics to be knighted are Peter Gregson, vice-chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, and Robert Edwards, 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge scientist who won 바카라사이트 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for pioneering in-vitro fertilisation.
O바카라사이트r sector figures honoured include Rosemary Cramp, emeritus professor of archaeology at Durham University, and Sarah MacIntyre, professor of social and public health science at 바카라사이트 University of Glasgow, who have both been made dames.
Elaine Thomas, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University for 바카라사이트 Creative Arts, has been appointed Commander of 바카라사이트 Order of 바카라사이트 British Empire.
