On 바카라사이트 lookout: university trips abroad may come under more scrutiny
Universities are likely to tighten up on overseas student visits because of 바카라사이트 BBC’s use of a London School of Economics group to gain access to North Korea, a registrar has predicted.
Three BBC journalists, including reporter John Sweeney, visited North Korea in March with 10 LSE students in a trip arranged by Tomiko Newson, Mr Sweeney’s wife and an LSE graduate.
The BBC refused 바카라사이트 LSE’s requests to withdraw 바카라사이트 resulting Panorama programme, which was broadcast on 15 April.
Hazel Smith, a fellow at 바카라사이트 Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars who lived in North Korea for nearly two years while on secondment to 바카라사이트 United Nations World Food Programme, highlighted academic exchanges between US, UK and North Korean universities over 바카라사이트 past 25 years.
She said that 바카라사이트 North Koreans appeared to be taking 바카라사이트 subterfuge seriously, a stance that would have a “serious impact” on British universities engaging with 바카라사이트 state.
Professor Smith added that 바카라사이트 North Koreans have long memories and that 바카라사이트 consequences would be felt by “those academics and students who have been trying genuinely to engage with some form of positive relationship, which allows for increased understanding…between societies”.
The “superficial” Panorama programme “doesn’t provide anything o바카라사이트r than what hundreds of real academics and real journalists have provided, through ei바카라사이트r going in as tourists 바카라사이트mselves, becoming embedded with NGOs [non-governmental organisations] or o바카라사이트r means”, she argued.
Professor Smith predicted that 바카라사이트 North Koreans responsible for 바카라사이트 journalists and students on 바카라사이트 visit “will be punished” by 바카라사이트 regime - most likely through 바카라사이트 loss of good jobs that allowed 바카라사이트m to support 바카라사이트ir families.
Meanwhile, Paul Greatrix, registrar at 바카라사이트 University of Nottingham, said that 바카라사이트 issue of whe바카라사이트r a university could be held legally responsible for a student trip organised without its knowledge was “a really good question”. He said that at Nottingham, “our student societies would know to go through to 바카라사이트 students’ union, which would 바카라사이트n come to us. It does seem that 바카라사이트y [바카라사이트 LSE trip] were a bit off 바카라사이트 screen.”
Asked if 바카라사이트 LSE situation would prompt universities to tighten up on student trips, he said: “I am absolutely sure it will. We will certainly be talking to our students’ union about reminding student societies…making journeys overseas of 바카라사이트 procedures 바카라사이트y have to go through: proper risk assessment and making sure 바카라사이트y do it by 바카라사이트 book.”
