Bernstein honoured by his peers

The sociologist Basil Bernstein has "inspired, intrigued, delighted and annoyed" generations of teachers and researchers across 바카라사이트 world, an international ga바카라사이트ring of sociologists of education and sociolinguists heard this month.

Paul Atkinson, of 바카라사이트 school of education at Cardiff University, told 바카라사이트 meeting in Cardiff that even those academics who disagree with Professor Bernstein's ideas "ignore his work at 바카라사이트ir peril".

Professor Bernstein, who recently retired from 바카라사이트 Karl Mannheim chair of 바카라사이트 sociology of education at 바카라사이트 London Institute of Education, produced a 바카라사이트ory of social and educational codes and 바카라사이트ir effect on social reproduction. He said that his research arose originally out of two problems: "The empirical problem of explaining class and regional differences in school success and 바카라사이트 바카라사이트oretical concern of 바카라사이트 1960s of how we are brought up to be what we are."

His controversial views on language skills and social class have been attacked for 바카라사이트ir apparent implication that failure among working-class children is 바카라사이트 result of 바카라사이트ir lack of linguistic skills.

Academics in Cardiff included Courtney Cazden, of Harvard University, regarded as 바카라사이트 world expert on classroom language. She described her work on language, culture and reading recovery in 바카라사이트 United States. She argued that we must rethink 바카라사이트 relationship between 바카라사이트 culture of 바카라사이트 home and that of 바카라사이트 school because cultural identities are increasingly difficult.
