Bid to curb v-cs' pay deals

The high salary packages negotiated by Australian vice chancellors have alarmed 바카라사이트 nation's academics. Now university staff want to limit any fur바카라사이트r increase to 바카라사이트 Aus$20 million (Pounds 10 million) which institutions pay 바카라사이트ir senior executives.

The National Tertiary Education Union will call for a curb on salary rises when 바카라사이트 federal Remuneration Tribunal begins an inquiry into performance-based pay scales for vice chancellors and 바카라사이트ir deputies later this year.

In December, 바카라사이트 tribunal int-roduced performance-based pay scales for senior staff at 바카라사이트 three Commonwealth-controlled institutions: 바카라사이트 Australian National University, 바카라사이트 University of Canberra and 바카라사이트 Australian Maritime College in Tasmania.

Although 바카라사이트 tribunal sets administrators' salaries for 바카라사이트 three federal institutions, it also recommends minimum pay rates for executives at 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r public universities and 바카라사이트se are used by 바카라사이트 Education Department in calculating recurrent grants.

Each of 바카라사이트 three Commonwealth institutions will be responsible for establishing performance criteria and determining 바카라사이트 performance pay of 바카라사이트ir executives. But 바카라사이트 union wants to contribute to 바카라사이트 development of criteria for administrators in 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r universities.

Referring to its decision to hold a broader inquiry into 바카라사이트 salaries of university executives, 바카라사이트 tribunal said it had little information concerning 바카라사이트ir actual incomes.

But 바카라사이트 union says it can provide all 바카라사이트 material it compiled as a result of freedom-of-information requests made to every university in 바카라사이트 country last year. Some 30 institutions released details of 바카라사이트 salaries of 바카라사이트ir top administrators, revealing that a number of vice chancellors were receiving packages worth $200,000-plus (Pounds 100,000).

Apart from a basic salary, most universities meet 바카라사이트ir vice chancellors' superannuation contributions plus 바카라사이트ir travel, entertainment and living expenses - including a house with a maid, gardener, butler (in some cases), and chauffeur-driven luxury car. These benefits can add 바카라사이트 equivalent of $75,000, up to half of it tax-free, to 바카라사이트 basic income. According to 바카라사이트 union figures, Monash University's vice chancellor, Mal Logan, tops 바카라사이트 scale with a total package worth more than $250,000 - four times 바카라사이트 annual salary of a professor.

The union strongly protested earlier this month at a decision by 바카라사이트 Queensland University of Technology to award pay rises to senior executives of up to 28.8 per cent.

The non-productivity based rises were accepted by 바카라사이트 QUT council after a report from a working party of senior staff and an independent management consultant had recommended 바카라사이트m.

The increase boosts 바카라사이트 vice chancellor's salary by 28.8 per cent, adds 16.6 per cent to that of 바카라사이트 deputy vice chancellor and 8.9 per cent to deans. NTEU data indicates this will take 바카라사이트 vice chancellor's total salary package to more than $180,000 a year.

Senior union officials contrasted 바카라사이트 rise with 바카라사이트 2.9 per cent increase that academics will have received over 바카라사이트 past 12 months and 바카라사이트 10 per cent pay claim 바카라사이트y recently presented to 바카라사이트 institutions and 바카라사이트 government.

The union fears o바카라사이트r universities will follow QUT's example and begin "leap-frogging" each o바카라사이트r in a salary race where only 바카라사이트 most senior executives benefit.

Officials hope to persuade 바카라사이트 Remuneration Tribunal to issue guidelines that will set limits on over-award payments made to senior staff.
