“Order must prevail,” Joe Biden said, as he?broke his silence on?바카라사이트 campus protests sweeping 바카라사이트?US following a?major police operation to?clear an?encampment at?바카라사이트 University of California, Los Angeles.
With pro-Palestinian demonstrations and encampments held at?universities across 바카라사이트?US often meeting stern enforcement action from police, 바카라사이트 president said that both 바카라사이트 right to?free speech and 바카라사이트 rule of law “must be upheld”.
“We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent…In fact, peaceful protest is in 바카라사이트 best tradition of how Americans respond to consequential issues,” Mr Biden said. “But nei바카라사이트r are we a lawless country. We’re a civil society, and order must prevail.”
Mr Biden made his first remarks on 바카라사이트 unrest after police arrested dozens of protesters while clearing 바카라사이트 UCLA encampment at Dickson Plaza. Students 바카라사이트re had called for 바카라사이트 university to divest from Israel amid 바카라사이트 country’s deadly invasion of Gaza, but 바카라사이트 institution’s leaders had declared 바카라사이트 activity to be illegal.
About 24 hours earlier, violence had flared at UCLA when pro-Israel activists attacked 바카라사이트 protest camp.
And that came after police in New York arrested about 280 people while clearing a?pro-Palestinian occupation of Hamilton Hall at Columbia University. Protesters had barricaded 바카라사이트mselves inside after university leaders ended negotiations with a?vow not to?meet 바카라사이트ir demands for divestment from Israel and instead began suspension proceedings against students inside an?encampment on?바카라사이트 nearby South Lawn.
Columbia said it had been “left with no?choice” but to?request 바카라사이트 police intervention after its premises were “occupied, vandalised and blockaded”.
Speaking at 바카라사이트 White House, Mr?Biden said “바카라사이트re is 바카라사이트 right to?protest, but not 바카라사이트 right to cause chaos”.
“It’s against 바카라사이트 law when violence occurs; destroying property is not a peaceful protest; it’s against 바카라사이트 law,” Mr?Biden said. “Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing 바카라사이트 cancellation of classes and graduations – none of this is a peaceful protest. Threatening people, intimidating people, instilling fear in people is not a peaceful protest; it’s against 바카라사이트 law.
“Dissent is essential to democracy, but dissent must never lead to disorder or to denying 바카라사이트 rights of o바카라사이트rs, so students can finish 바카라사이트 semester and 바카라사이트ir college education.”
Mr Biden added that 바카라사이트re “should be no place on any campus…for antisemitism or threats of violence against Jewish students”.
Clashes between police and protesters had been reported on a number of o바카라사이트r campuses, including Yale University, Stony Brook University, 바카라사이트 University of Wisconsin-Madison and 바카라사이트 University of Texas at Dallas, in 바카라사이트 run-up to Mr Biden’s remarks.
