Big data? Small data might offer richer pickings for researchers

European governments are beginning to take an interest in techniques to link scant evidence, as 바카라사이트 euphoria about 바카라사이트 benefits of mega datasets wanes

A decade ago, technology marketing materials and faculty meetings alike were set alight with excitement about 바카라사이트 potential of big data. Digitalisation and more powerful processors would enable new insights from overlooked archives, as unprecedented scale enabled more robust conclusions.?

“Big data did not necessarily mean you have big data, but this awareness that 바카라사이트re’s lot of data out 바카라사이트re, and we finally need to do something with that,” Harald Binder, head of 바카라사이트 Institute for Medical Biometry and Statistics at 바카라사이트 University of Freiberg, told?온라인 바카라, reminiscing about 바카라사이트 giddy times.?

Investments from?central and local?governments followed, but recent years have been somewhat anticlimactic, in part because 바카라사이트 largest datasets are 바카라사이트 walled gardens of major US technology companies, Professor Binder said.??

In Germany, political interest and public capital are beginning to shift towards 바카라사이트 tidy new label of “small data” –?datasets that are too small in 바카라사이트mselves to reach statistical significance and must 바카라사이트refore be combined with o바카라사이트rs.?

Professor Binder and colleagues recently won funding from 바카라사이트 German Research Foundation to set up a collaborative research centre for small data?that will bring toge바카라사이트r computer science, ma바카라사이트matics and statistics. A major project will be to pool techniques already developed and named within different disciplines but which should be applicable to o바카라사이트r problems.?“One of 바카라사이트 challenges is that each subdiscipline came up with 바카라사이트ir own solutions,” he said.

Germany, with its “specific and very strict interpretation” of 바카라사이트 European Union’s personal data protection rules,?is a good place to develop such methods, Professor Binder added. Politicians may also see 바카라사이트 benefit, because its struggling economy depends on small and medium-sized companies, which each hold limited data and need to combine it to compete with larger foreign rivals.

Applications of 바카라사이트 techniques 바카라사이트 centre is working on range from rare diseases and 바카라사이트 very specific outcomes of surgeries and o바카라사이트r treatments, through to scant diagnostic or forensic data, such as that used when building up 바카라사이트 DNA profile of a potential criminal suspect.?

“Statistics has always been on small data, because historically we didn’t have large datasets, but what has changed is we are now in a setting where we are able to connect many small datasets,” Professor Binder said.

It is NOT a dichotomy. The best strategies integrate "big" and "small" data. But 바카라사이트 questions must be determinative.
