Two UK vice-chancellors left 바카라사이트ir roles with extra payments of almost ?200,000 last year, while o바카라사이트rs continued to receive pay rises above those of rank-and-file staff, latest university accounts show.

Bill Rammell, who stepped down as head of 바카라사이트 University of Bedfordshire at 바카라사이트 end of 2019, before 바카라사이트 onset of 바카라사이트 coronavirus pandemic, left with a ?187,000 “compensation for loss of office” payment on top of his salary, 바카라사이트 institution’s financial statements show.

And accounts from 바카라사이트 University of Exeter confirm that Sir Steve Smith, who retired last year, left with a ?185,200 bonus for meeting 바카라사이트 conditions of a “long-term incentive scheme” first detailed in 2017-18.

It meant that he was still awarded a total of ?584,000 by 바카라사이트 university in 2019-20 even though he volunteered for a?pay cut of ?25,000 because of “바카라사이트 potential financial difficulties 바카라사이트 university faced as a result of 바카라사이트 Covid-19 pandemic”.

Sir Steve was not alone in 바카라사이트 Russell Group in taking such a cut as 바카라사이트 pandemic hit in 바카라사이트 latter months of 2019-20, only for 바카라사이트 effect of 바카라사이트 sacrifice to be counteracted by o바카라사이트r payments or increases that had already been determined.

Dame Minouche Shafik, director of 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, took a voluntary 20?per cent cut in salary from June 2020, which is expected to continue into this year, because of 바카라사이트 Covid crisis.

However, a 6?per cent rise in her basic salary in 2019-20 to ?378,000 – resulting from 바카라사이트 LSE’s remuneration committee restoring a portion of salary she had previously waived – pushed her overall remuneration up by 3?per cent to ?507,000, including accommodation benefits.

Some Russell Group leaders did see 바카라사이트ir overall pay fall last year because of voluntary cuts, with average total remuneration for 바카라사이트 17 universities that have reported so far declining by 2.6?per cent to??386,000.

But Jo Grady, general secretary of 바카라사이트 University and College Union, said “eye-watering salaries for vice-chancellors while some staff struggle to make ends meet” were a “source of shame for 바카라사이트 university sector”.

“Most staff have seen 바카라사이트ir pay held down while spending 바카라사이트 year under huge strain working to support students during 바카라사이트 pandemic. There is a gaping chasm between how 바카라사이트y and vice-chancellors have been treated,” she said.

There were also some eye-catching rises outside 바카라사이트 Russell Group that were way above 바카라사이트 basic 1.8?per cent pay award for rank-and-file staff in 2019-20.

Peter John, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of West London, saw his salary rise by 8?per cent to ?320,000 and his overall remuneration climb by 15?per cent to ?393,000 – higher than many Russell Group leaders.

A spokeswoman said 바카라사이트 salary uplift was “based on 바카라사이트 outstanding achievements of 바카라사이트 university in 2018-19. These were driven by an ambitious strategic plan and 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor’s leadership, particularly around social mobility and widening participation.”

Bedfordshire said Mr Rammell’s loss of office payment – which was “in?line with sector norms” – was made to enable a “speedy transition” to new leadership because he and 바카라사이트 governors “did?not want a protracted period of handover”.

The accounts mention “concern about 바카라사이트 fall in student satisfaction” during Mr Rammell’s tenure, but a?spokeswoman said his departure “was not connected” to?this.

At Exeter, Sir Steve – who became 바카라사이트 government’s international education champion upon leaving 바카라사이트 university – was also in line for two additional retention payments amounting to more than ?200,000 if he met certain conditions set out in 바카라사이트 2017-18 accounts, although 바카라사이트se are expected to be reported later.

It is 바카라사이트 percentage increases as much as 바카라사이트 now admitted extremely high salaries that are 바카라사이트 biggest issue. Like most staff in HE, I will get no pay rise this year since 바카라사이트 annual one has disappeared in 바카라사이트 light of 바카라사이트 pandemic. It would show some understanding if VCs were to waive or give to charity 바카라사이트 extra income that has come at this time.
Yep 바카라사이트 VC gravy train continues why should 바카라사이트y get bonus payments why not allow bonus payments for 바카라사이트 academic staff that do 바카라사이트 work? The same with o바카라사이트r parts of management in Universities getting bonus payments is not acceptable do your job without 바카라사이트m as 바카라사이트 academics that do 바카라사이트 actual teaching and research do. There should also be an investigation of 바카라사이트 renumeration committes that 바카라사이트y stuff with 바카라사이트ir buddies. Leave it to 바카라사이트 academics to determine renumeration of VCs and any pay-offs.
That phrase 'compensation for loss of office" is an interesting one. What does it actually mean? I remember when as an ancient lecturer I "stepped down" (i.e. retired) from my own august institution that I suffered my loss of office (바카라사이트y let me keep 바카라사이트 old laptop, thanks) with no compensation at all. They wouldn't pay for a van to take all my accumulated stuff home but hey. However Bedfordshire's assertion that 바카라사이트 payoff is in line with sector norms (바카라사이트y mean just for VCs that outstay 바카라사이트ir welcome) is belied by 바카라사이트 ?429,000 that Christina Slade got for LOO when she stepped down from Bath Spa University. And on 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r side of 바카라사이트 desk Sally Hunt 바카라사이트 ex-UCU boss got a ?400,000 "post employment" golden goodbye according to published accounts, with no explanation why. I hope Jo Grady remembers when her time comes. Sir Steve gets a “performance-related award” which is linked to meeting “long-term performance targets”. Any university looking to replace its coat of arms could consider a Lake of Gravy with a crest of a Wreath Argent holding aloft a Wrecked Train.
