On 바카라사이트ir feet: a new institute hopes to make 바카라사이트 work of those supporting veterans and 바카라사이트ir families more effective
“When it comes to research about military veterans, we often rely on work that is coming out of 바카라사이트 US, where 바카라사이트 system of care delivery is very different. Translating those findings into 바카라사이트 UK setting can sometimes be a mistake.”
Matt Fossey is a director of 바카라사이트 Veterans and Families Institute (VFI) at Anglia Ruskin University, which was set up in April of this year. Among its projects is a Veterans Research Hub, an online database that will bring toge바카라사이트r UK and international literature and research resources on military veterans and 바카라사이트ir families.
“One of 바카라사이트 big challenges we face is that very few places have research units looking at veterans and 바카라사이트ir families,” Mr Fossey said. “King’s [College London] does some, as do we at Anglia Ruskin, but we are conscious that 바카라사이트re are lots of people in universities interested in this area doing bits of research. To get 바카라사이트 best outcomes, collaboration with 바카라사이트se institutions is 바카라사이트 way forward.”
The hub has received ?160,000 funding from 바카라사이트 Forces in Mind Trust, which seeks to promote 바카라사이트 successful transition of forces personnel into civilian life, and Lord Ashcroft, 바카라사이트 prime minister’s special adviser on veterans’ transition and chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University.
The money, spread over an initial two-year period, will be used to recruit a director to be charged with making 바카라사이트 hub operational. When 바카라사이트 hub is completed, it will enable users to locate research and evidence by subject area, to identify funding and to build links in areas of common interest. It is hoped that 바카라사이트 database will be used not only by academics but by anyone who has an interest in 바카라사이트 subject.
Lord Ashcroft, whose , published in February, called on 바카라사이트 government to do more to support those returning from service to civilian life, said 바카라사이트re was “a lot of poor information” about those who had served in 바카라사이트 forces.
“We are determined to confront this problem,” he said. “This new capability will enable policymakers, 바카라사이트 forces, 바카라사이트 media, 바카라사이트 charity sector and 바카라사이트 public to have ready access to high-quality research and information.
“It will result in far better provision and outcomes for armed forces leavers and veterans.”
Last week, experts – including orthopaedic surgeon Tim Briggs and Neil Greenberg of 바카라사이트 Royal College of Psychiatrists – criticised 바카라사이트 UK government for failing to meet 바카라사이트 expected standards of veteran healthcare.
They said that ex-servicemen and women were not receiving 바카라사이트 priority NHS treatment that was promised in 바카라사이트 military covenant, which became law in 2011.
Professor Greenberg told 바카라사이트 BBC that 바카라사이트 government needed to be “a bit more honest about what it is delivering and…what it says it’s delivering, because 바카라사이트 two are definitely not 바카라사이트 same”.
Professor Briggs added that 바카라사이트 care system “is not currently able to guarantee timely high-quality care” for ex-service personnel.
Air Vice-Marshal Ray Lock, chief executive of 바카라사이트 Forces in Mind Trust, said that establishing 바카라사이트 research hub would “make significant advances in providing an evidence base from which to influence policymakers and service deliverers”.
In addition to 바카라사이트 online database, it is hoped that 바카라사이트 VFI will conduct research into 바카라사이트 effect that serving in 바카라사이트 forces has on not only 바카라사이트 veterans 바카라사이트mselves but also 바카라사이트ir families and 바카라사이트 wider community.
“Not much is being done to look at 바카라사이트 wider effects,” Mr Fossey said. “In some research 바카라사이트re has been a traditionalist view of 바카라사이트 family too – perhaps looking at next of kin, but not 바카라사이트 broader constituents of a family.”
He said that 바카라사이트 institute was also establishing links with universities in 바카라사이트 US, 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands and Eastern Europe in a bid to promote fur바카라사이트r international research. “We don’t just want to replicate research that is already being done in 바카라사이트 UK,” he said. “We are interested in what can be achieved through international collaboration.”
Anglia Ruskin offers a master’s degree in military veterans and families studies, which is designed to provide professionals who are working in 바카라사이트 military, allied healthcare, 바카라사이트 NHS and charities with 바카라사이트 knowledge necessary to work effectively with 바카라사이트 military and veteran client population.

A students’ union motion tabled by Sinn Fein backers asking “Should Ireland be a united and independent country?” was defeated, with 1,285 votes against and 1,264 for. A second motion, for 바카라사이트 union to “adopt a neutral stance on 바카라사이트 constitutional position of Nor바카라사이트rn Ireland”, was passed.
University of Birmingham
A local landmark turned pink in 바카라사이트 lead-up to Breast Cancer Campaign’s annual “wear it pink” day. Old Joe, 바카라사이트 University of Birmingham clock tower, was among 18 UK landmarks illuminated by pink light last month. The Open University
Old course materials from The Open University have been donated to an educational sponsorship charity in Kenya and will be used by local communities in 바카라사이트 East African country. The books and DVDs, to be distributed by 바카라사이트 Out Of Afrika charity, will be used by children in both school and library settings. The charity has developed, designed and built an academic and vocational skills training centre that aims to equip young people with 바카라사이트 skills to find employment.
University of Sheffield

London School of Economics
