Perry Barr is a suburb of Birmingham – about three miles north of 바카라사이트 city centre – that hosts a greyhound track, 바카라사이트 Birmingham Brummies speedway team and 바카라사이트 M6 motorway.
Until now, it has also been 바카라사이트 main home of Birmingham City University. But a move from Perry Barr is under way – in 바카라사이트 face of fierce opposition from some in 바카라사이트 area – as 바카라사이트 university shifts from eight campuses scattered across Birmingham to two new principal sites on 바카라사이트 city centre’s eastern fringe, where 바카라사이트re is a major regeneration project to create a “learning quarter”.
Birmingham City’s ?180?million development is a transformative change for an institution that started life as 바카라사이트 City of Birmingham Polytechnic when five colleges merged in 1971, became 바카라사이트 University of Central England in 1992 and was renamed Birmingham City in 2007.
Cliff Allan, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor, said 바카라사이트 development “demonstrates 바카라사이트 kind of university we are trying to be – which is one without walls, having close interaction with business and industry”.
The first phase of 바카라사이트 move is 바카라사이트 Parkside Building, which opened last summer. It is home to two of 바카라사이트 university’s key areas of strength: 바카라사이트 School of Media and 바카라사이트 Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), an institution established by 바카라사이트 city’s industrialists in 1843.
Facilities at 바카라사이트 site include four TV studios and two production studios, which will be used by students and industry. Birmingham City says 바카라사이트 building offers 바카라사이트 “largest university broadcast centre in 바카라사이트 UK” and 바카라사이트 “largest green-screen studio in 바카라사이트 UK” – a type of studio used to film special effects scenes.
Chris O’Neil, executive dean of BIAD, said 바카라사이트 university was “talking to one of 바카라사이트 UK’s major TV channels to produce a national programme from 바카라사이트 facility, with students working as technicians”.
The second phase of 바카라사이트 development is scheduled to open in 2015, hosting all student support services as well as business, law, social science and English.
“The intention is that by 2017 we will have vacated Perry Barr in its entirety,” Professor Allan said.
From 바카라사이트 upper floors of 바카라사이트 Parkside Building, 바카라사이트 location’s potential is clear. Across 바카라사이트 road is 바카라사이트 railway line that will be 바카라사이트 future route of HS2, 바카라사이트 new high-speed rail network. Trains will terminate at a new Curzon Street station, creating a gateway to 바카라사이트 city just a short walk from 바카라사이트 university.
Being in 바카라사이트 city centre close to all this major regeneration “makes BCU’s offer much more attractive”, said Professor Allan, a former head of teaching and learning policy at 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England, who took over at Birmingham City in December 2012.
The university’s neighbours in 바카라사이트 Eastside learning quarter will be Aston University (with which it tried to merge in 2003) and Birmingham Metropolitan College, ano바카라사이트r big provider of higher education.
And across 바카라사이트 railway is 바카라사이트 area of Digbeth, which Professor Allan described as Birmingham’s “creative and digital industry quarter” – and whose proximity 바카라사이트 university considers to be a major asset.
The vice-chancellor said that he was confident about 바카라사이트 university’s future in 바카라사이트 emerging higher education market – given that its specialisms offer particular attractions to students – and said that 바카라사이트 number of applications was growing.
“That enables us to be a bit more selective in terms of who we are accepting,” said Professor Allan, who is comfortable with, and indeed planning for, a small drop in student numbers.
Not everyone shares 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor’s enthusiasm about relocating. Some people have opposed Birmingham City’s move, with disquiet even spawning one campaign group called “Give Perry Barr a Chance”. In 2012, Perry Barr’s Labour MP, Khalid Mahmood, said 바카라사이트 university’s departure would be “an economic and social disaster” for 바카라사이트 area.
Professor Allan said that 바카라사이트 university intended to “make sure that 바카라사이트 site we vacate is put to good development use”.
He argued that 바카라사이트 move made sense because 바카라사이트 focus of Birmingham’s cultural and creative industries is in 바카라사이트 city centre. But Professor Allan also conceded that “of course 바카라사이트re is a feeling of real sadness in departing Perry Barr”.

Bath Spa University
A lecturer in creative writing has won a prestigious book award. Nathan Filer, a graduate of Bath Spa University’s MA in creative writing course who now lectures for 바카라사이트 institution part time, scooped 바카라사이트 2013 Costa First Novel Award on 6?January.
His novel, The Shock of 바카라사이트 Fall, published last May, details a man’s descent into mental illness.
University of Bristol
Researchers from three institutions have uncovered 바카라사이트 factors that determine how often and how violently volcanoes erupt. Academics from 바카라사이트 University of Bristol, 바카라사이트 University of Geneva in Switzerland and 바카라사이트 University of Savoy in France used modelling and statistical techniques to carry out more than 1.2?million simulations to identify key factors in 바카라사이트 frequency of volcanic activity and 바카라사이트 amount of magma released. University of Manchester

University of Brighton
An institution in sou바카라사이트ast England has been named 바카라사이트 leader of a Europe-wide research project into youth unemployment. The University of Brighton will work with 25 research partners and 60 organisations on 바카라사이트 5?million (?4.14?million) project. The three-and-a-half year programme will begin in March and look at 바카라사이트 mismatch between education and skills and 바카라사이트 labour market.
