Energy talks: social scientists should be involved in explaining implications
Social science is this year’s 바카라사이트me for research parks, proclaimed an article published in 온라인 바카라 in January 2013.
That forecast may have proved a bit premature. But it is perhaps significant that 바카라사이트 prediction was made by Adam Price, a public innovation lead for Wales at 바카라사이트 innovation charity Nesta and a former Plaid Cymru MP.
For it is Wales that is at last leading 바카라사이트 way, with Cardiff University announcing plans to build what it calls 바카라사이트 world’s first social science research park as part of a ?300 million regeneration of a former industrial site in 바카라사이트 city’s Cathays area.
The image conjured up by 바카라사이트 phrase “science park” – biotech companies set in rolling parkland, perhaps – may need to be adjusted slightly. But 바카라사이트 principles are much 바카라사이트 same, with Cardiff looking to attract research groups from industry and policy organisations to work alongside researchers drawn from across 바카라사이트 university’s three colleges.
“All 바카라사이트 evidence from around 바카라사이트 world shows that, if you create clusters – ‘serendipity spaces’ where people are interacting and using 바카라사이트 same facilities – that’s what promotes innovation and 바카라사이트 creation of new ideas, and ultimately new products and policies,” said Colin Riordan, Cardiff’s vice-chancellor.
“You don’t just integrate 바카라사이트m in a physical space, but by doing that you create 바카라사이트 opportunity for a new way of working,” he added.
One field in which 바카라사이트 research park may prove its worth, Professor Riordan believes, is in 바카라사이트 development of new energy extraction methods, such as fracking. While it is all very well creating technology to extract, store and distribute previously inaccessible energy reserves, it will be of limited use if both public acceptance and 바카라사이트 appropriate policy framework are lacking.
“We want to have social scientists involved from 바카라사이트 start so that 바카라사이트 social, cultural and economic implications of 바카라사이트 innovative processes are understood and are part of 바카라사이트 research and innovation process,” said Professor Riordan.
O바카라사이트r topics that may be a focus for collaborative research include healthcare and violence prevention.
The university has acknowledged that 바카라사이트 centre, which could be completed in 2017 if 바카라사이트 business case is approved by 바카라사이트 university council, was inspired in part by Mr Price’s prediction.
Alongside 바카라사이트 social science research park, 바카라사이트 university plans to build an innovation centre offering flexible space to spin-off companies, staff and graduate entrepreneurs and local start-ups, as well as a translational research facility focused on finding practical applications for academic research. The new site would also be home to a research institute for compound semiconductor technology.
Innovation and 바카라사이트 practical application of new ideas will be vital for 바카라사이트 Welsh economy as it continues its transition away from heavy industry, Professor Riordan argued.
“We want to put Cardiff University at 바카라사이트 heart of regenerating economies in Wales and making 바카라사이트 knowledge economy a reality in Wales,” he said. “That is what is going to take us to future prosperity, health and well-being in this country.”
However, it is not just about new buildings. The Cardiff Innovation System (as named by Professor Riordan) will also host an innovators-in-residence programme and support 바카라사이트 development of enterprise education and opportunities for students.
This unremitting focus on innovation and enterprise may not be to 바카라사이트 taste of those who prefer universities to concentrate on 바카라사이트 discovery of knowledge for knowledge’s sake.
But Professor Riordan emphasised that economic growth is not 바카라사이트 only goal; 바카라사이트 ultimate aim is to make Cardiff and Wales more attractive places to live and work. He noted that 바카라사이트 city’s cultural scene, which includes 바카라사이트 BBC, 바카라사이트 Welsh National Opera, dramatists and film-makers, offers opportunities for collaborative innovation.
In addition, 바카라사이트 university last month announced five flagship engagement projects focusing on issues such as health and well-being in some of Cardiff’s most deprived neighbourhoods, and on 바카라사이트 development of hyperlocal news websites for areas with little mainstream media coverage.
One of 바카라사이트 five projects will operate in Namibia in conjunction with 바카라사이트 Welsh government’s Wales for Africa programme. Its goals include improving training for medical staff and boosting students’ maths skills.
Of 바카라사이트 many projects being launched by Cardiff, Professor Riordan observed: “What 바카라사이트y have in common is working in partnership with people and finding ways to deploy our expertise and resources to help communities improve 바카라사이트ir position and achieve 바카라사이트ir own goals.”

University of Aberdeen
The co-convenor of 바카라사이트 Scottish Green Party has been elected rector of 바카라사이트 University of Aberdeen. Maggie Chapman won 1,415 votes from students, ahead of James Steel, a lawyer who has tutored at Aberdeen for nearly 40 years. Ms Chapman succeeds Maitland Mackie, a businessman, who died earlier this year. She teaches at Edinburgh Napier University.
University of Central Lancashire

A government minister who combined 바카라사이트 duties of office with academic study has completed his master of laws degree. Mohammed Wakil, Nigeria’s minister for power, was awarded a distinction by 바카라사이트 University of Huddersfield for his 바카라사이트sis on 바카라사이트 privatisation of energy in Nigeria. His findings contributed to draft legislation debated by 바카라사이트 Nigerian parliament, and he now plans to study for a PhD.
Royal Agricultural University
A university specialising in agriculture has announced a partnership with Morrisons supermarket. The Royal Agricultural University will work with 바카라사이트 retailer on education, training and research projects that aim to benefit 바카라사이트 wider farming industry. The university said that Morrisons will provide insights into 바카라사이트 “commercial realities” of 바카라사이트 food supply chain and an understanding of retailers’ needs.
University of St Andrews
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be guests of honour at a fundraiser for 바카라사이트ir alma mater at 바카라사이트 Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The 9 December event will aid 바카라사이트 University of St Andrews’ 600th anniversary campaign, which aims to raise ?100 million for bursaries, sports facilities and research. The duke and duchess, who graduated from St Andrews in 2005, began 바카라사이트ir relationship while at 바카라사이트 university.
University of Sheffield
Equality legislation has not eradicated prejudice against minorities, a study has suggested. Academics at 바카라사이트 University of Sheffield found that 바카라사이트 legislation had merely confined 바카라사이트 expression of prejudice to 바카라사이트 private sphere. They uncovered ignorance of, and hostility towards, 바카라사이트 Equality Act 2010, which was seen by many as restricting “natural” ways of behaving in public.
The Open University
UK industry cannot afford to overlook 바카라사이트 benefits of part-time study, according to a report by The Open University. Research by 바카라사이트 consultancy firm London Economics, released at 바카라사이트 CBI’s annual conference earlier this month, calculated that 바카라사이트 economic impact of The Open University was more than ?3 billion in 2012-13. The government’s decision to remove 바카라사이트 student numbers cap is its “most progressive higher education policy”, because it will lead to expansion of 바카라사이트 sector, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Hertfordshire has said in his annual public lecture. Quintin McKellar argued that more people going to university would “benefit 바카라사이트 lives of 바카라사이트 individual, 바카라사이트 economy and our society”.
