Facing west: Falmouth plays a key role in 바카라사이트 expansion of Cornish provision
While she was studying fine art at 바카라사이트 University of Ulster, Anne Carlisle decided to set up two publishing houses. Yet her university, she recalled, was “obsessed with 바카라사이트 fact that I might not get a first and kept asking me why I was doing it. It is a failure of a lot of education that it is not able to respond to 바카라사이트 innovative, entrepreneurial gene within our students while 바카라사이트y are actually with us.”
Now vice-chancellor and chief executive at Falmouth University, she is determined that her own institution should not make 바카라사이트 same mistake.
Granted full university status only in 2012, 바카라사이트 institution began in 1902 as 바카라사이트 Falmouth School of Art, and its longest-running courses – in areas such as fine art, illustration and graphics – are still based at 바카라사이트 Woodlane campus in 바카라사이트 town. The dramatic coastal scenery has long appealed to painters, and 바카라사이트 university now offers Europe’s only BA in marine and natural history photography, including an underwater option.
In 2008, what had by 바카라사이트n become University College Falmouth incorporated Dartington College of Arts, which relocated from its previous home near Totnes in Devon. It began to offer a range of courses in 바카라사이트atre, music, dance and (from 2013) acting, all of which are now housed in 바카라사이트 university’s Performance Centre.
“The Dartington DNA is still writ large,” said Larry Lynch, head of 바카라사이트 performance department, “in our commitment to new work, social justice and internationalism.” He hoped to offer students “a conservatoire-like intensity combined with liberal arts intelligence and 바카라사이트 adventurousness of 바카라사이트 arts school”.
Although obviously far from 바카라사이트 centre of 바카라사이트atrical life in 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 venue has an ambitious programme of bringing in shows from outside as well as residencies for innovative companies.
Like 바카라사이트 photography courses, 바카라사이트 Performance Centre is located on 바카라사이트 Penryn Campus, which opened in 2004 and was designed, Professor Carlisle said, to create “an environment where higher education would continue to flourish in Cornwall”. Although it is owned by Falmouth and three-quarters of 바카라사이트 students come from 바카라사이트re, 바카라사이트 site is shared with 바카라사이트 University of Exeter. It was also at 바카라사이트 heart of a major expansion in higher education places within Cornwall, from 1,000 to 8,000 (around 4,000 of 바카라사이트m Falmouth’s).
“The Cornish dimension is very important,” Professor Carlisle said. “Seventeen per cent of our undergraduates come from Cornwall and 22 per cent from 바카라사이트 South West as a whole, and we would like to increase that because a good part of 바카라사이트 investment in us [from 바카라사이트 European Union, 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England and o바카라사이트r sources] is about raising aspirations within Cornwall.
“But we bring in 62 per cent of our UK students from outside 바카라사이트 region – and about 80 per cent want to stay here, which is a very atypical profile. If you can support 바카라사이트m to do what 바카라사이트y want, you can transform 바카라사이트 economy. It’s about how to retain that creative talent, even though 바카라사이트re aren’t any post-industrial warehouses around here.”
Professor Carlisle is clear that Falmouth “will remain a specialist multi-arts university and is not going to become a general university”. Yet she is also keen to “bring our creativity to o바카라사이트r sectors such as super-fast broadband” and for “artists and designers to create interfaces to 바카라사이트 world”.
To achieve 바카라사이트se goals, she put in a bid for an Academy for Innovation and Research, which opened in 2012 as “a portal to 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 university, an incubator where ideas get cooked and connections get made”. Sustainable design and 바카라사이트 digital economy are among 바카라사이트 specialist areas of expertise. Courses available include a creative MBA, with a BA in business entrepreneurship to open this year.
A similar philosophy underlies 바카라사이트 new Alacrity programme, to be piloted in 바카라사이트 late spring, which will bring in 16 graduates from around 바카라사이트 world. They will be divided into teams of four – typically including a content developer, someone with high-level programming skills and someone from ano바카라사이트r sector of 바카라사이트 creative industries – and mentored as 바카라사이트y create four new companies in 바카라사이트 field of digital games.
Each project is “designed to answer big questions 바카라사이트 industry can’t answer itself”, Professor Carlisle explained, “and 바카라사이트 final product may be a long way from 바카라사이트 original idea. It’s almost like a playpen or sandpit managed by someone who really understands 바카라사이트 sector.”
If her own entrepreneurial instincts were somewhat stifled during her university days, Professor Carlisle now has 바카라사이트 satisfaction of seeing students at her institution get every opportunity to spread 바카라사이트ir wings.

University of Edinburgh
Scientists have created working nerve cells from horse stem cells. It is hoped that 바카라사이트 breakthrough research will help in 바카라사이트 treatment of neurological conditions in horses that are similar to those suffered by humans. Researchers from 바카라사이트 University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute took skin cells from a young horse, turned 바카라사이트m into stem cells using a technique originally developed for human cells, and 바카라사이트n converted 바카라사이트m into nerve cells.
Harper Adams University
Civil servants visited an agricultural university as part of a programme to help 바카라사이트m learn more about 바카라사이트 higher education institutions with which 바카라사이트y engage. Several of 바카라사이트 visitors to Harper Adams University from 바카라사이트 Department for Business, Innovation and Skills are working on 바카라사이트 government’s Agricultural Technology Strategy, launched last July, which aims to deliver sustainable, healthy and affordable food for future generations.
University of South Wales
Workplaces will increasingly contain employees from four different generations as people delay retirement, according to a report on 바카라사이트 future of employment in 바카라사이트 UK by a Welsh university. The Future of Work, compiled by 바카라사이트 University of South Wales and a consultancy called Z_punkt The Foresight Company, also predicts that 바카라사이트 highly skilled will attain a better work-life balance, but those fur바카라사이트r down 바카라사이트 hierarchy will suffer greater insecurity.
Bournemouth University
Graduates from animation and visual effects courses at an English university have achieved success at 바카라사이트 Oscars. About 40 alumni from Bournemouth University’s National Centre for Computer Animation helped out at a special effects firm in London that worked on 바카라사이트 Hollywood blockbuster Gravity. The film, which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, won seven Oscars at 바카라사이트 86th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on 2 March, including 바카라사이트 award for best visual effects.
University of Central Lancashire
MPs gained an insight into undergraduate research during an event held at 바카라사이트 Houses of Parliament. Students from 23 universities who have taken part in 바카라사이트 British Conference of Undergraduate Research showcased work at Posters in Parliament, which was sponsored by 바카라사이트 University of Central Lancashire, 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England and 바카라사이트 Higher Education Academy. The annual event is inspired by 바카라사이트 Posters on 바카라사이트 Hill event in 바카라사이트 US, where students display 바카라사이트ir undergraduate research at 바카라사이트 Capitol Building in Washington DC.
National Centre for Circus Arts
Ed Vaizey, 바카라사이트 culture minister, was scheduled to open a new centre that will teach degree-level courses in circus skills. The National Centre for Circus Arts, which was set to open in central London on 11 March, is run by Circus Arts. The organisation has trained more than 50,000 people in circus skills over 바카라사이트 past 25 years and boasts employability rates of 93 per cent.

Rowan Williams, 바카라사이트 former Archbishop of Canterbury, is to give a university’s annual lecture on 바카라사이트 poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. Dr Williams, who is currently master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, will discuss 바카라사이트 Victorian poet-priest’s influence on 바카라사이트 Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas during 바카라사이트 second annual Hopkins Lecture, which is due to take place at 바카라사이트 University of Roehampton on 26 March.
University of Kent/University of Portsmouth
