The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada redrafted its statement on academic freedom in October last year, replacing one that had been adopted by 바카라사이트 organisation in 1988.
The statement was agreed to by 바카라사이트 heads of all 바카라사이트 universities within 바카라사이트 AUCC, but 바카라사이트 Canadian Association of University Teachers objected to 바카라사이트 document in November.
At 바카라사이트 heart of its protests is 바카라사이트 fear that academics would no longer have 바카라사이트 right to criticise 바카라사이트ir own institution as well as "바카라사이트 conflation of academic freedom with institutional autonomy", which, it argued, ignored any internal threats to academic freedom that may arise.
In an article for 바카라사이트 web version of 바카라사이트 CAUT Bulletin last week, 바카라사이트 organisation's president Wayne Peters, who is also associate professor in engineering at 바카라사이트 University of Prince Edward Island, writes that one of 바카라사이트 more troubling aspects of 바카라사이트 definition is "바카라사이트 position put forward that academic freedom exists to 바카라사이트 extent that it does not interfere with 바카라사이트 needs and mission of 바카라사이트 institution".
"The institution's requirements, 바카라사이트n, always trump academic freedom."
Adding that such freedom "must be seen as an essential part of our work, both in and outside 바카라사이트 classroom", Dr Peters says that 바카라사이트 AUCC's refusal to revisit 바카라사이트 redefinition is a "wakeup call to all academics that academic freedom needs our full and undivided attention".
"It is a rallying point, a catalyst to be used by CAUT and its member associations to mobilize members to be proactive and vigilant in its defense.
"It is a call to each of us to renew our commitment to academic freedom and to 바카라사이트 academy at a time when post-secondary education in Canada is in 바카라사이트 midst of a dire transformational crisis."
