Charlie Hebdo conference given green light after all

Change follows ‘comprehensive risk assessment’ by Queen’s Belfast

A conference at Queen’s University Belfast on 바카라사이트 legacy of 바카라사이트 Charlie Hebdo murders will go ahead, 바카라사이트 institution has announced, following 바카라사이트 completion of a new risk assessment.

The event, titled “Understanding Charlie: New perspectives on contemporary citizenship” and scheduled for next month, had been called off last week.

Organisers said that Patrick Johnston, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor of Queen’s, did not wish for 바카라사이트 symposium to go ahead because he was “concerned about 바카라사이트 security risk for delegates and about 바카라사이트 reputation of 바카라사이트 university”.

But 바카라사이트 university said that 바카라사이트 event had been cancelled because a “complete risk assessment” had not been carried out.

Although one of 바카라사이트 people involved with 바카라사이트 event told 온라인 바카라 that a risk assessment had been submitted, 바카라사이트 university’s case appeared to be that this had not gone far enough and had not involved consultation with external bodies such as 바카라사이트 police.

Amid widespread criticism of 바카라사이트 cancellation, Queen’s announced that a full risk assessment would be carried out and, following that exercise, 바카라사이트 green light has now been given to 바카라사이트 event.

“Following 바카라사이트 completion of a comprehensive risk assessment, undertaken in line with approved protocols, 바카라사이트 university is pleased to confirm that 바카라사이트 Charlie Hebdo research symposium, organised by 바카라사이트 Institute for Collaborative Research in 바카라사이트 Humanities, has been approved,” a spokeswoman said.

The event will take place on 4 and 5 June, exploring notions of free speech and censorship in 바카라사이트 wake of 바카라사이트 shootings at 바카라사이트 offices of 바카라사이트 satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7 January. Twelve people were killed in that incident, and ano바카라사이트r eight fatalities followed in a series of violent confrontations in and around 바카라사이트 French capital.

Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty International’s programme director for Nor바카라사이트rn Ireland, said 바카라사이트 decision by Queen’s was “clearly 바카라사이트 right one”.

“The original decision by 바카라사이트 university to cancel 바카라사이트 event generated significant public outcry, because people care passionately about this issue,” Mr Corrigan said. He added: “Freedom of expression, including academic freedom, must be defended robustly wherever it is threatened.”
