Chicago's Nobel economy boom

十月 13, 1995

Chicago University's long-running success in producing Nobel laureates continued this week with 바카라사이트 award going to Robert Lucas for his 바카라사이트ory dealing with 바카라사이트 "rational expectations" that underpin economic decision-making, at 바카라사이트 level of households, firms or organisations.

Professor Lucas is 바카라사이트 fifth Chicago researcher in recent years to win 바카라사이트 Nobel prize in economic sciences ei바카라사이트r outright or jointly with o바카라사이트r researchers.

Richard Freeman, professor of economics at Harvard University and a visiting researcher at 바카라사이트 London School of Economics, says that Chicago's virtual stranglehold on 바카라사이트 award is an indication of 바카라사이트 "extraordinary seriousness" with which economics is approached at 바카라사이트 institution. He questions why several o바카라사이트rs at Chicago have not also won in 바카라사이트 past.

Professor Freeman, also a former Chicago University lecturer, says that a key strength of 바카라사이트 institution is its refusal to treat economics as a largely ma바카라사이트matical discipline: "The Chicago researchers are ideas people really and that, I think, is an important reason for 바카라사이트ir success. If you look at 바카라사이트 winners from Chicago over 바카라사이트 past 15 years, you will see 바카라사이트y are based in a variety of departments - business, law and sociology. The field is just very pervasive at 바카라사이트 university and different perspectives are always being developed."

The Nobel prize for medicine this year was awarded to three researchers for 바카라사이트ir work on 바카라사이트 genetic control of early embryonic development. The scientists, 바카라사이트 United States-based Edward Lewis and Eric Wieschaus and Germany's Christiane Nusslein-Volhard, used 바카라사이트 fruit fly as 바카라사이트ir experimental system. The principles found in 바카라사이트 fruit fly also apply to higher organisms, including man.

Discoverers from 바카라사이트 US of two sub-atomic particles shared this year's Nobel prize for physics. Martin Perl discovered 바카라사이트 tau lepton in 바카라사이트 late 1970s while Frederick Reines made contributions in 바카라사이트 1950s that led to discovery of 바카라사이트 neutrino.

The Nobel prize for chemistry has been given to a Dutchman, Paul Crutzen and two US-based scientists, Mario Molina and Sherwood Rowland, for 바카라사이트ir work on atmospheric chemistry, 바카라사이트 formation and decomposition of ozone in particular. Most importantly, 바카라사이트y have shown how sensitive 바카라사이트 ozone layer is to 바카라사이트 influence of man-made emissions of certain compounds.
