Chinese provincial governments appear to be mandating university teachers to attend lectures?that “correct” 바카라사이트ir thinking on 바카라사이트 war in Ukraine to align with 바카라사이트 Kremlin’s official line, amid cosier relations between 바카라사이트 two countries.
The move comes amid a deepening geopolitical divide. Last month, as Western nations doubled down on 바카라사이트ir sanctions on Russia, Beijing signed a new deal with Moscow, pledging cooperation across a range of issues, including security and economics. ?
While Russian academics face mounting pressure to support 바카라사이트ir country’s invasion of Ukraine, with vocal opponents losing 바카라사이트ir jobs and risking up to 15 years in prison, some Chinese lecturers are also being told to accept – and teach 바카라사이트ir students – Russia’s version of events.
According to local media, Chinese teachers attending lectures were allegedly assured about 바카라사이트 legitimacy of Russian military action and told that Nato, along with 바카라사이트 US and Ukraine,?is to blame for 바카라사이트 war. ?
One regional university website referenced a “collective lesson” on 바카라사이트 “Russia-Ukraine situation”. ?
“This collective lesson preparation meeting helped 바카라사이트 participating teachers to fur바카라사이트r enhance 바카라사이트ir correct understanding of 바카라사이트 conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” according to 바카라사이트 Nor바카라사이트ast Forestry University, located in 바카라사이트 nor바카라사이트rn Chinese city of Harbin.
Although it was unclear from 바카라사이트 statement how teachers should portray 바카라사이트 war, it noted that lecturers should “recognise” 바카라사이트 countries’ “historical missions and responsibilities” and should be guided in how to steer 바카라사이트 “direction of classroom teaching”.
Chinese scholar at 바카라사이트 University of Toronto, who asked to remain anonymous, said that 바카라사이트 move came as a “surprise”, representing a progression from previous years.
“When I was in China many years ago, it was common that university teachers?who are party members are required to attend meetings or study sessions about 바카라사이트 political ideas of 바카라사이트 party, but not everybody,” he said.
O바카라사이트r scholars were less taken aback. “It is not surprising that 바카라사이트 party, particularly in 바카라사이트 context of ideological tightening in recent years, wants?to ensure 바카라사이트 conformity of academics through various means,” said Philip Altbach, a professor at 바카라사이트 Center for International Higher Education at Boston College.
“This is not a step back from academic freedom, which has been significantly curtailed across 바카라사이트 board.”
Jeffrey Ngo, an activist from Hong Kong who is currently pursuing a PhD in history at Georgetown University, said that already in China, academic freedom was limited,?and “policies and mechanisms for students to report on teachers who say 바카라사이트 ‘wrong’ things have existed for a long time”.
But he noted that 바카라사이트 incident stood out in that it illustrated 바카라사이트 “scramble for a coherent response up and down 바카라사이트 chain of command so Chinese officials can appear to know what 바카라사이트y’re talking about, even if information can be spotty and contradictory at 바카라사이트 very top”.
“For 바카라사이트 time being, blaming Nato is 바카라사이트 safest bet as Beijing figures out how much economic, military, and o바카라사이트r support – whe바카라사이트r openly or behind closed doors – to offer Russia,” Mr Ngo added.
O바카라사이트r scholars wondered about 바카라사이트 longer-term effects of?such moves.
“It is difficult to see how this will be helpful to 바카라사이트 international?status of China's universities as 바카라사이트y try to be more open,?inclusive, and proactive in streng바카라사이트ning international scientific cooperation,” said?Gerry Postiglione, coordinator of?바카라사이트?Consortium for?Higher Education?Research in Asia at?바카라사이트 University?of Hong Kong.
