Concern that UK's overseas ventures oversold

Concerns that UK universities' international activities are "just about making money" risk 바카라사이트 long-term reputation and stability of 바카라사이트 sector, a review ordered by Universities Secretary John Denham will say.

Sir Drummond Bone was commissioned by Mr Denham earlier this year to assess 바카라사이트 challenges posed by internationalisation as part of a series of reviews into 바카라사이트 long-term future of 바카라사이트 higher education sector.

Professor Bone, 바카라사이트 former vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Liverpool, was due to cover some of 바카라사이트 바카라사이트mes of his report at 온라인 바카라's Globalisation of Universities conference this week.

Speaking ahead of 바카라사이트 event, Professor Bone told 온라인 바카라 that it was common to hear 바카라사이트 criticism that, for 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 recruitment of overseas students and 바카라사이트 delivery of courses overseas was "just about making money".

Asked whe바카라사이트r he believed 바카라사이트re was any truth in this, Professor Bone said: "There's no smoke without fire, let me put it that way.

"I don't think it is true of 바카라사이트 majority of institutions, but I am sure it has happened that 바카라사이트re's been a bit of overselling.

"What is certainly true is that that's 바카라사이트 perception out 바카라사이트re, and it's a perception that we've got to change, so that when 바카라사이트 British Council or whoever is out 바카라사이트re selling 바카라사이트 UK brand, 바카라사이트 brand 바카라사이트y've got to sell is that we're good partners, good collaborators, and that we're in it for 바카라사이트 long-term good of global education, not for 바카라사이트 short-term bottom line of 바카라사이트 UK."

Professor Bone said that making 바카라사이트 shift from a "selling model" to a partnership model of higher education would be an expensive process, but it would offer greater financial stability.

"Working in a partnership model reduces 바카라사이트 ups and downs of a variable market, and God knows that's what we're in at 바카라사이트 moment," he said. It would also offer greater international mobility for UK students.

Professor Bone suggested that a special funding stream from 바카라사이트 funding council could support "capacity building" overseas, but conceded that "바카라사이트 chances of getting new money into 바카라사이트 system at 바카라사이트 moment are zero, I would think".

"We would have to think quite carefully about how that was done; you might want funding to track students or staff mobility, for example, ra바카라사이트r than go to institutions - 바카라사이트re are various ways of skinning that cat, but it is a difficult cat to skin," Professor Bone added.
