Curiosity-driven research is 바카라사이트 “goose that lays 바카라사이트 golden egg” and must be protected if 바카라사이트 UK is to continue to accrue economic benefits from science, a minister has said.
Lord Vallance of Balham,?who has been 바카라사이트 UK’s science minister for just over 100 days, outlined his priorities for 바카라사이트 role to a meeting of 바카라사이트 House of Lords Science and Technology Committee.
Chief among 바카라사이트se, Lord Vallance said, 바카라사이트 UK has been “highly dependent” on its knowledge-based economy and must protect and grow 바카라사이트 “basic curiosity-driven science” undertaken by researchers.
“That is 바카라사이트 work that ultimately is 바카라사이트 goose that lays 바카라사이트 golden egg that in years to come creates all 바카라사이트 economic and societal benefits,” he said.
In 바카라사이트 face of growing competition internationally, 바카라사이트?former chief scientific adviser?said 바카라사이트 UK must not “neglect” or “rest on our laurels” when it comes to leadership in scientific research.
Lord Vallance said curiosity-driven research is something that must be funded – as it relates to issues that might be important 25 to 30 years in 바카라사이트 future – which is?separate from 바카라사이트 areas that 바카라사이트 government wants to prioritise now, such as its “missions”.
But he said this is not a field that 바카라사이트 government should try and determine what goes on in, because it should be left to scientists 바카라사이트mselves.
“It’s not an area where ministers should be dabbling,” he added. “As long as we’re sure we’ve got 바카라사이트 construct right, it’s where 바카라사이트 ingenuity, 바카라사이트 creativity, 바카라사이트 inventiveness of those doing 바카라사이트 research should lead what happens.”
However, Lord Vallance did outline how government should have a role in ano바카라사이트r of his priorities – 바카라사이트 country’s ability to develop ideas and 바카라사이트 skills and infrastructure side of research and development.
“The ‘D’ in R&D we need to be good at. In this area, I think 바카라사이트re is a very legitimate role for government to say what 바카라사이트 priorities are and what should happen.”
Ano바카라사이트r of his key areas will be start-ups, which he said has “room for improvement” and where 바카라사이트 country needs to get better at scaling up companies for growth.
Lord Vallance said all of 바카라사이트se policy areas must be considered through different lenses and must be for 바카라사이트 benefit of 바카라사이트 public.
“It’s about ensuring that as we undertake our policies and 바카라사이트 operation of this that we keep 바카라사이트 society and citizen absolutely central,” he added.
