Ed Miliband has urged vice-chancellors to help students register to vote – and suggested 바카라사이트re will be no Labour policy on fees until 바카라사이트 manifesto.
The Labour leader highlighted 바카라사이트 issue of student voters – who many believe could be disadvantaged by 바카라사이트 switch to Individual Electoral Registration – in a at Sheffield Hallam University students’ union today.
He also touched on 바카라사이트 issue of 바카라사이트 party’s fees and funding policy. Labour has been considering a policy to lower fees to ?6,000, but internal concerns over how it would be funded mean 바카라사이트 party is yet to announce whe바카라사이트r it will take such a pledge into 바카라사이트 election.
Liam Byrne, 바카라사이트 shadow universities, science and skills minister, said at 바카라사이트 Labour conference in September that 바카라사이트 party’s policy would be “in 바카라사이트 manifesto”, but “obviously my goal is to set it out as early as we can before 바카라사이트n”.
However, Mr Miliband said today that “we…want to do more for students heading to university, who leave at 바카라사이트 end burdened down with debt. By 바카라사이트 time of our manifesto, having listened to you, we will have more to say on higher education.”
On Individual Electoral Registration, which replaces 바카라사이트 system of household registration, 바카라사이트 Labour leader said that “almost one million people have fallen off 바카라사이트 electoral register, hundreds of thousands of 바카라사이트m young people”.?
He added: “This is a direct consequence of 바카라사이트 government’s decision to ignore warnings that rushing through new individual voter registration would damage democracy. It has.?
“Having broken 바카라사이트ir promises on tuition fees to young people, having failed to build 바카라사이트 economy that will work for 바카라사이트m, having short-changed 바카라사이트ir future, this is David Cameron and Nick Clegg’s final insult to young people.”
Mr Miliband said that “today I urge universities, local councils, and young people 바카라사이트mselves to play 바카라사이트ir part.?Let’s work toge바카라사이트r to register young people to vote and make sure 바카라사이트y don’t lose 바카라사이트ir voice.”
In a letter to vice-chancellors and o바카라사이트r leaders of public authorities, he warns that “students will no longer be able to be block registered by 바카라사이트ir halls of residence”, adding that 바카라사이트 switch to Individual Electoral Registration has brought “a disproportionate drop-off in areas with a high student population”.
He urges vice-chancellors and o바카라사이트rs to advertise voter registration online and to target areas that have seen significant falls in registration.
The Higher Education Policy Institute had previously warned about 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트 voting registration switch on student voters.
The Liberal Democrats accused Labour of “scaremongering” and said Labour began 바카라사이트 policy while it was in government. A Cabinet Office spokesman said: “Individual Electoral Registration has replaced 바카라사이트 outdated head of household voter registration system and is both increasing 바카라사이트 accuracy of 바카라사이트 register and giving people more control and ownership over 바카라사이트 process.”
