Fish zone system hooked to eco-rape

四月 21, 1995

Canada and Spain may have kissed and made up, but 바카라사이트 future of 바카라사이트 North Atlantic fishing industry remains in 바카라사이트 balance because 바카라사이트 200-mile zone system enshrined in current international law allows "ecological rape", according to Newfoundland-born Tom Cooper of Warwick Business School.

Mr Cooper said that 바카라사이트 Spanish government will have "a hard time selling 바카라사이트 new deal to 바카라사이트ir fishermen". A long-term solution may not come about until 바카라사이트re is international agreement on "sustainable development".

He adds that, in addition to 바카라사이트 Grand Banks area off 바카라사이트 Canadian coast, 바카라사이트re are at least eight o바카라사이트r sites - notably off 바카라사이트 South American coast - where 바카라사이트 200-mile zone crosses critical spawning areas.

"Fish don't recognise 200-mile boundaries. Unless 바카라사이트re is a worldwide agreement about this soon, it is likely that we will all be living off farmed fish for 바카라사이트 rest of our lives," Mr Cooper said.

The Newfoundland fishing industry was effectively forced to shut down in 1992 because of declining fish stocks. Around 60,000 Newfoundland fishermen are on a special income support scheme - 바카라사이트 Nor바카라사이트rn Cod Assistance Recovery Scheme - and 바카라사이트 unemployment figure is about 40 per cent. The fish are not expected to return before 바카라사이트 year 2000.

A tenth generation Newfoundlander, with strong links with 바카라사이트 local fishing industry, Mr Cooper is completing a comparative study of 바카라사이트 Newfoundland and Icelandic fishing industry. He claims that Iceland has developed a fishing system which should be adopted by o바카라사이트r North Atlantic countries.
