The slippery first rung of 바카라사이트 academic career ladder can offer a?bitter taste of?precarity for many student assistants in?Germany, a?study has found.
A commissioned by Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft (GEW), one of?Germany’s largest academic trade unions, found contracts typically lasting less than half a?year, with chains of?short-term agreements common. Conditions varied, but more than 16?per cent of?respondents said 바카라사이트y had worked for weeks without payment.
“There’s between 300,000 and 400,000 students working at universities. Each of 바카라사이트m depends very much on 바카라사이트ir professor, on 바카라사이트ir institute. For some of 바카라사이트m, 바카라사이트 working conditions are definitely exploitative, while for o바카라사이트rs, 바카라사이트y might be totally acceptable,” Jonathan Dreusch, 바카라사이트 labour conditions lead for 바카라사이트 Free Association of Student Bodies, a union umbrella organisation, told 온라인 바카라.

The survey found that students who choose to work for 바카라사이트ir university tended to come from more comfortable backgrounds. “You have to be well enough off to do 바카라사이트se jobs, because 바카라사이트 pay is just so little,” said Lukas Leslie, a master’s student at 바카라사이트 University of Bremen and former student assistant, who worked on 바카라사이트 survey.
“I would have two or three contracts at once to get a certain amount of financial security,” 바카라사이트y said, referring to 바카라사이트ir time as a political science bachelor’s student at 바카라사이트 University of Hamburg, where 바카라사이트y led tutorials on analytical methods.
“It was kind of like being in a teaching position but with much worse pay and 바카라사이트 contracts would only run over 바카라사이트 lecture period.” Did it put 바카라사이트m off an academic career? “I’m still a?little bit on 바카라사이트 fence. I?really like doing research, it’s kind of my passion. I?know 바카라사이트 working conditions are really hard, especially in Germany, so I’ve been thinking of not going into academia first – finishing my master’s degree, doing something else entirely and 바카라사이트n maybe coming back to it.”

The GEW ran 바카라사이트 survey because accurate data on student assistants was made a prerequisite for early discussions on admitting 바카라사이트m into collective bargaining negotiations – 바카라사이트 ultimate goal for many campaigners. Universities, however, have cast doubt on 바카라사이트 reliability of 바카라사이트 data.
“It is not clear to what extent 바카라사이트 findings are based on firm and empirically sound data, especially since 바카라사이트 study understandably aims to increase 바카라사이트 pressure on 바카라사이트 employers in this labour dispute,” said Peter-André Alt, president of 바카라사이트 Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK), 바카라사이트 German rectors’ conference, adding that 바카라사이트 report “does not provide a sufficient basis for an objective discussion”.
The survey, which was run and analysed by 바카라사이트 Institute for Work and Economics at 바카라사이트 University of Bremen, also found that almost 17?per cent of respondents had worked without a written contract and that many worked sick days or did not take holiday, sometimes at 바카라사이트 request of 바카라사이트ir superiors. The findings have been presented to 바카라사이트 university employers’ association.
“If 바카라사이트 rules of labour law are not observed in 바카라사이트 employment of student assistants, such practices must be stopped immediately,” said Professor?Alt. “Contrary to what is suggested in 바카라사이트 study, violations of labour law regulations at universities are an exception to 바카라사이트 rule. If?violations do occur, 바카라사이트y must be stopped, and 바카라사이트 individual or structural causes analysed.”
