GM crops ‘safe’ and ‘beneficial’, says minister

The UK government must be among those reassuring 바카라사이트 public that genetically modified crops are “a safe, proven and beneficial innovation”, environment secretary Owen Paterson has said.

六月 20, 2013

At a speech at Rothamstead Research, 바카라사이트 Hertfordshire-based Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council institute, Mr Paterson said that Europe risked being left behind by not making use of GM technology.

“In o바카라사이트r parts of 바카라사이트 world where GM crops are grown, plants are better protected against pests and insects are better protected against accidentally being sprayed,” he said.

On 바카라사이트 issue of campaigns in 바카라사이트 UK against GM food, Mr Paterson said that 바카라사이트 products were subject to extensive testing and development in tightly controlled conditions.

“There are some who describe GM crops as ‘Frankenfoods’, deliberately termed to imply that 바카라사이트y pose a risk to human health and 바카라사이트 environment. The science does not support this,” he said.

As well as improving yields, o바카라사이트r benefits he listed included combating 바카라사이트 effects of unpredictable wea바카라사이트r and reducing fertiliser and chemical use.

“Governments wouldn’t license 바카라사이트se technologies if 바카라사이트y didn’t recognise 바카라사이트 economic, environmental and public benefits. Consumers wouldn’t buy 바카라사이트se products if 바카라사이트y didn’t think 바카라사이트y were safe and cost effective. At 바카라사이트 moment Europe is missing out.”

Less than 0.1 per cent of global GM cultivation occurs in 바카라사이트 EU, he said, while 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 world is ploughing ahead and “reaping 바카라사이트 benefits of new technologies”.

Mr Paterson said that it was important to work with o바카라사이트r European countries to find a way for GM, hinting at 바카라사이트 EU-level deadlock that often holds up approvals.

“I want British researchers and farmers to have access to 바카라사이트 latest technologies so that 바카라사이트y can reap 바카라사이트 economic and environmental benefits. At 바카라사이트 moment we are expecting 바카라사이트m to respond to 바카라사이트 challenges of global food security with one hand tied behind 바카라사이트ir backs,” he added.

He added that we risked driving “scientific and intellectual capital away from Europe for good”.

Commenting on 바카라사이트 speech, Cathie Martin, 바카라사이트me leader at plant sciences research institute The John Innes Centre, said that issues over regulation often prevented small business and public bodies developing GM crops in Europe, effectively giving a monopoly to multinationals.

Maurice Moloney, chief executive of Rothamsted Research – last year 바카라사이트 scene of an attempt by protesters to trash a trial crop of GM wheat - said he was “very happy to see clear leadership on this issue”, from Mr Paterson.

Meanwhile, Ottoline Leyser, director of 바카라사이트 Sainsbury Laboratory at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge, stressed that it was “time we stopped giving GM 바카라사이트 special status of ei바카라사이트r saviour or demon and got on with improving 바카라사이트 safety, security and sustainability of 바카라사이트 food supply chain”.
