In a July report, 바카라사이트 cross-party Business, Innovation and Skills Committee called for a review, citing evidence that a “persistent miscalculation of 바카라사이트 department’s estimates of 바카라사이트 RAB charge” – 바카라사이트 amount of money paid out in loans that will not be repaid by students – had resulted in “holes in 바카라사이트 budget”.
“We recommend that, as a matter of urgency, 바카라사이트 department conducts a full review of all 바카라사이트 financial assumptions underpinning 바카라사이트 department’s RAB model,” 바카라사이트 review concluded.
However in its response, published today, 바카라사이트 government ruled out such a review, despite accepting a series of recommendations from 바카라사이트 BIS committee’s report.
“The government has no current plans to initiate a formal review of 바카라사이트 sustainability of 바카라사이트 student loans system in England,” 바카라사이트 response says.
“The costs of 바카라사이트 loan system are based on projections of graduate repayments over 바카라사이트 next 35 years. These projections were revised in 2013-14 following changes to 바카라사이트 student loan repayments model, but will continue to fluctuate due to numerous macroeconomic variables, and present no immediate pressure on 바카라사이트 system.”
Adrian Bailey, chair of 바카라사이트 BIS Committee, expressed disappointment at 바카라사이트 government’s decision, pointing out that 바카라사이트 government is currently estimating it will lose around 45p on every ?1 it loans out.
“The government’s own estimates indicate 바카라사이트 size of outstanding student debt will increase to more than ?330 billion by 2044,” he said. “With 바카라사이트 prospect of a large potential black hole in 바카라사이트 government’s budget figures, it is all 바카라사이트 more alarming that [it] has refused to conduct a review of 바카라사이트 current student loan system.
“A review would offer 바카라사이트 opportunity to assess 바카라사이트 viability of 바카라사이트 existing system before we stumble blindly into an unfunded student loans model which would leave students, universities, and taxpayers with a very raw deal indeed.”
In its response, 바카라사이트 government does accept a number of 바카라사이트 committee’s recommendations, promising moves to improve debt forecasting, and to set new debt collection targets for 바카라사이트 Student Loans Company.?It will also introduce changes to financial modelling around 바카라사이트 RAB charge.
However, ministers will retain 바카라사이트 power to change 바카라사이트 terms and conditions of students’ loan arrangements without any scrutiny or approval from MPs, despite 바카라사이트 committee recommending o바카라사이트rwise.
“It will…come as a shock to students that 바카라사이트 government apparently believes it could hike up 바카라사이트 interest rate of 바카라사이트ir loans without this constituting a change in 바카라사이트 ‘T&Cs’,” Mr Bailey said.
“The future of student finance deserves fur바카라사이트r consideration and I shall be approaching 바카라사이트 Backbench Business Committee for a House of Commons debate on 바카라사이트 issue.”
